Interview with Singer Taj of Fused By Defiance

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Taj! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What specific allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?

Taj: What sets our sound apart is the emphasis of down to earth issues and solutions. Listening to our tracks takes the listeners on a journey with discussion being that of hot topics with common sense solutions. We are also big fans of sarcasm and satire so listeners can get a sense of that as well.

CV: For any band, dynamics are key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?

Taj: For us, our dynamics are shown physically on stage. The ebbs and flows of the music are harnessed within the highs and lows of our performance. Our band tends to be very energy based and we ask our audiences to step up and match our energy at every show.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?

Taj: I personally am a huge fan of musicals and storylines, so when I joined, I made sure to bring that element to Fused by Defiance. Every song we have written has incorporated an entire vision from start to finish. No detail is too big or small. All of our songs have a theme that centers around a social concept and uses stories and satire to describe the problem while offering some simple solutions.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim. Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?

Taj: FxD has been around for 10+ years. We are a group of hard working individuals and what keeps us going is that we just want to have fun. We do this for our own enjoyment as well as the ability to bring joy to our fans!

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?

Taj: I honestly think the bigger you are the more out of touch with reality you can become, yes there is a middle ground, it is just not celebrated.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?

Taj: We are as authentic as you can get! What you see is what you get…we all accept each other for who we are…flaws and all.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves? Taj: When we write we generally have the backbone of a song written out and we dissect it together and create a monster track together from this.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?

Taj: The good thing about our song writing process is that we are all very creative and have a lot of ideas that can make a track great. Everyone’s personalities tend to balance out when we write so that the final product is just a combination of everyone’s emotion.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?

Taj: We have gotten called a funk band before and honestly were not that sure why? But whatever works I guess! We would say we are closer to metalcore and nu-metal

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?

Taj: Shows are our bread and butter. Fans can expect members to immediately get the crowd engaged and their heart rates pulsing. We rock your world from the first five seconds…we start playing and do not stop.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?

Taj: Our fans can expect more versatility coming in the future. We have songs with more story, more emotion, and more dynamics in the works.

CV: Thank you again Taj for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
