Interview with Canadian Rockers Jaded Truth

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel is a real game changer for an artist or band when it comes to their career in the modern music industry? Is it something they do, or say, or achieve?
Jaded Truth: I think with today’s technology, the game changer is being true DIY. You can record music at home with a relatively small setup and distribute it on the internet.

You can film your own videos and upload content on social media. It’s the true punk rock spirit of being independent, self-reliant. You can book shows with local venues. Artists can really have control of their own destiny and content. When you realize that and put in the work, that’s when you really see results

CV: Years ago it was said that video killed the radio star. Has social media killed what was left in your opinion?
Jaded Truth: In some ways it’s made it easy, but there is so much content out there. Even when we put out our single there were attest 5 or 6 bands in our local scene who released music the same day! It was close to Halloween so that’s always prime time for rock music. My point is, there is so much content out there these days that so many bands and artists get lost in the shuffle! Obviously there is little revenue from streaming but it’s a great way to get your music heard. You really have to put in a lot of work and be creative to stand out amongst the pack

CV: With the world now being post-COVID, how has things changed for you as an artist? Has a new music industry really emerged in its wake as many are saying? What are your thoughts?
Jaded Truth: I think it’s great and there is a lot of enthusiasm and hunger for live music. But it also seems oversaturated. We have a pretty good scene here in St. John’s, sometimes there can be 3 or 4 rock shows on the same night so it harder and harder to stand out. We are just really happy to be playing live again and seeing fans. The pandemic definitely took a lot out of the music industry but you just have to keep grinding and pursue your passion!

CV: If you knew the pandemic was coming, what would you have done differently as an artist to prepare?
Jaded Truth: I don’t think we would have done anything different. We aren’t really a touring band so I didn’t affect us on that level. It sucked not being able to play shows locally. The pandemic pretty much hit around the time we released our first album so that was a total bummer. There’s no way to predict the future, no matter what obstacles you face you just gotta roll with it.

CV: Do you believe bands and artists who make the biggest impact on fans, as well as other artists, are really ever aware that they are? Or do you think it’s more like a tunnel vision sort of existence for them, where they’re somewhat in the dark? Do you think such artists can actually see past their own work to even know the ripples they make on others?
Jaded Truth: It’s hard to see your own work from a fans perspective. There are bands that have albums that were not well-received by fans that I love. Everyone has their own opinion and perspective. I think you do need to have a certain amount of tunnel vision. You can’t make music to try and please somebody else. We don’t want to make music that is stereotypical of the grunge scene. There is only one Nirvana, only one Alice in chains. They probably didn’t realize the impact they were having at the time. I think an artist needs to be really self indulgent. As soon as you start catering to what people like or doing things to be more commercial, you’ve lost the plot.

CV: Does music need to be influential to be considered worth listening to in your opinion? Or can music simply be just an enjoyable auditory experience devoid of substance?
Jaded Truth: It can be either way! I’ve always appreciated music that has a message whether it is political or social justice. It definitely adds another element but sometimes it’s just need to throw on a record and escape from the modern world. At the end of the day, music is meant to be entertaining and enjoyable, but I’ve always had a special connection with artists who use their music as a vehicle to promote positive change in the world!

CV: What do you consider “being relevant” is when discussing how artists and bands should present themselves to the public? Does relevance translate into success in your opinion? In addition, what do you feel an artist can do right now to stay relevant?
Jaded Truth: I think it’s all subjective! If it’s relevant to you, that’s the most important thing! As I said, you need to be self indulgent and make the music for yourself. Those are the keys! The past 10 years or more, rock music has been more underground so I’m sure a lot of the older bands don’t feel relevant as they once did. As soon as you start trying to make music for Tik-Tok and things like that you’ve lost it as far as I’m concerned. If it feels specials and matters to you then other people will see the beauty in it!

CV: As an artist, what do you see as being your biggest lesson learned? And what type of impact has that lesson had on you as a person and your career?
Jaded Truth: I’ve learned to just be patience and don’t try to force creativity. Don’t try to anticipate what people are going to like. With the albums we’ve done I really feel like I’ve learned a lot about ourselves, songwriting, and production. Each album is like a little time capsule of your life. So they’ve all taught us lessons. The main one is believe in yourself and your music. Don’t rely on anyone else. You’re allowed to be a bit stubborn at times. Just believe in what you do and stay true to yourself.

CV: What's next? What can fans expect to see coming from you?

Jaded Truth: Well our new album just came out in November so hopefully people will be enjoying that! It’s definitely our strongest work yet! We are really looking forward to playing these songs live! We are hoping to tour in the future but no set plan for that as of yet! We are always being creative and working hard in the studio so expect another release sometime in 2023! We’re always on the grind!

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was such a pleasure. I wish you all the best.

Jaded Truth: It’s been a pleasure! Cheers to all the fans out there! Hopefully you enjoy the new album as much as we did making it! Keep it Jaded!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
