Interview with Producer and artist Ken Lewis of obSCENE Stealers

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.
Ken Lewis: Thanks for the invite Cosmick!

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What specific allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
KL: obSCENE Stealers is a collision of musical worlds and I describe our music as EPIC AF. It’s always going to have a big dramatic cinematic component because of my partner in obSCENE Stealers crime, Michael Maas.  I have nicknamed him Michael Maas the Movie Trailer Boss because he composes big film and TV trailers for a living, for films like The Batman, Fast & Furious, and Mulan.  Meanwhile, I’m deeply entrenched as a producer/mixer and finisher in the music industry and I have earned 114 gold records so far.  We each have different skill sets that complement each other well and the music we create together exceeds what other of us could do on our own.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
KL: It's that Michael Maas cinematic sensibility. As a producer, I know how to bring the drama and authenticity out of a vocal performance, Michael deeply understands how music interacts with moving pictures.  The combination of our sensibilities feels like going superpowers.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
KL: I think there’s a niche audience for epic music and our music is EPIC AF. Sometimes we throw down hip hop, sometimes dark pop, we’ve even got gospel coming at you. We are consistently dropping one single a month from now until the end of time. Our 3rd single “Losing Game” drops November 9th on all platforms. If you are reading this, the best way nowadays to help an independent artist is to listen to the whole song, follow the artist, like the song, playlist the song on a personal playlist.  That is like buying an mp3 for that artist because it helps rank them algorithmically which exposes them to more people.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
KL: Well, we have been swimming in the music business for a long time, but this is the first time we are both artists.  There is no other microcosm on earth like the music industry and all of its splinters. It’s a huge advantage for a new artist like us to have witnessed the successes and failures of many artists and learn.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
KL: Fun fact, more artists are making a living solely from music than at any other time in history. That’s primarily from streaming and sync income. Everybody picking up an instrument nowadays feels like they should be heard by the masses. But that’s never been the case in music. Now though, you can build from nothing, and slowly connect with fans, one by one until it's ten by ten, etc. and eventually those are gonna be your ride or die listeners. Fame is not the mission, a fan base that loves what we do definitely is. We have the added advantage that our music syncs very well for film, TV, and gaming.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
KL: Yes, I mean we’re comic book characters so how seriously could we really take ourselves? Our last cover “Side Effects” I morphed into some sort of badass lion dude. The creativity we’re surrounded by is inspiring, and I must give a big shout out to our comic book hero illustrators, www.ChrisMorgan.nl  and IG: Vincent Van Gill Art, these guys are the real dynamic duo behind obSCENE Stealers artwork!

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
KL: We try not to think so much when we create.  If we create enough, we’ll make enough great music to put out at the quality we want to maintain and grow into.  Sometimes we write to mostly fleshed out music (which always changes), sometimes the song starts on piano and moves to some EPIC AF soundscape.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
KL: I trust my instincts; they’ve led me well so far. I usually have a great sense of what a song could be long before it gets there. Also, me and Michael must love it and feel like it represents who we are both artistically but it also needs to match or exceed the quality of work we create for the music industry behind the scenes.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
KL: I am happy that anybody cares enough to listen.  And the biggest shout outs to the people who tell their friends about great new music they find. It’s tough for anybody to put music out independently so we have a lot of hard work ahead, but we are putting it in.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
KL: One single a month, every month until the end of time. We are stacked with great songs and every month we try to top the last one.  We hope you’ll also be hearing us in your favorite TV show or movie occasionally.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
KL: Thanks for the invite!!  Anybody who is still reading this, you’re the real MVP. Thank you for checking out obSCENE Stealers!!!  New single “Losing Game” drops November 9th with a new comic book cover.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
