Interview with the UK Punk Band No Restraint

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!
No Restraint: Hey Mick, thanks to you for having us.

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
No Restraint: I think that the definition “street core” fit perfectly to us, we basically play a mix of street punk and New York hardcore, with of course many other influences…I never wanted to put limits on what we do...No Restraints, right?

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
No Restraint: Well for an underground band, connection is a normal thing…we’re not rockstars, you can easily find us at a pub, at gigs or on socials. We don’t have fans, we have friends and/or people from our scene…we are the same.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
No Restraint: This is an example of what we consider “interaction with fans”

…it is not important, it’s the only thing that matter ;-)

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
No Restraint: Honestly I have no idea, you should probably ask to someone famous.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion? If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
No Restraint: It depends if we speak about our genre or about music in general. Music in general is an immense speech; there are every kinds of music and cultures.

In the Punk scene we share the same values worldwide, but there are many small differences in style, views, etc., it also reflects the environment where people live so the approach may vary.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
No Restraint: I don’t think that there is a special connection with the U.S.A., I don’t know for sure but I see that people listen to us more or less the same in the U.S.A. and Europe.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
No Restraint: Having a big exposure on socials makes you popular, not an artist.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
No Restraint: Honestly I have no idea, I’m a punk, trends are something stupid to me. Our ideal is do it yourself, do it your way. Only sheep follow.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
No Restraint: I think that in a globalized world you have easier access to any kind of music and influence, so probably this leads you in a more personal way to compose. But it's a double-edged sword, this can lead to a more original way to play music, but also to take from some styles and genres like from a menu without understanding the real meaning that there is behind it, and this brings to something empty and meaningless.

But, pandemic apart, you still see big concerts, sold out clubs and things like these, so I don’t think that the music impact itself has been weakened. Maybe with so many different styles it‘s more difficult to reach the right audience and become big starting from zero.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
No Restraint: Our new album is going to be released on April 22nd and it will be available on Vinyl, CD and digital. After that we will play around as much as possible to promote it, so keep an eye on our socials, we might come to your neighborhood. We are also going to release a new video and we are already planning to write some new songs...so, COVID permitting, it will be a full year :-)

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.
No Restraint: Thanks to you for giving us space!!!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
