Interview with Keyboardist Eric Bieber of Lips Turn Blue

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello,
Eric! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thanks for taking some time out of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.

CV: What's the dynamic like when a new member, especially a new front person, joins a band?  Is there an adjustment period expected?
Eric Bieber:
In our case, one band member (Roy Stein - drummer) and our manager (Bruce Pilato) were both instructors while Iggy, our new front man was at Nazareth College. It also made it easy because Iggy is a great person and a remarkable multi instrumentalist musician besides being a great vocalist. Because of this, there was almost no adjustment period other than learning the songs and getting comfortable with someone new singing the songs.

CV: Finding the right members for a band can be a challenging task. Finding a replacement member can be more daunting to say the least. How did you come to find singer Iggy Marino?
EB: We had spoken and played with a number of people in our search. No one quite felt right until we connected with Iggy. He sang a couple of the songs on the album and also demo'd a new song we had written. They were all quite exceptional and we knew it was going to be a great fit.

CV: Comparison is part of human nature. Have you at all found yourself quietly comparing Iggy to former DDrive vocalist, the late Phil Naro?
EB: Phil is a remarkable musician and vocalist. It would be almost impossible shoes to fill. What's great about Iggy is that he understands this. He gets the incredible legacy of Phil Naro and isn't trying to be Phil or sing like Phil. He's doing his own thing which is great and understands the importance of Phil's legacy and being respectful of that and fulfilling our commitment to Phil to have the music heard.

CV: Upon the group reforming after Phil's passing last year, the band name was changed from DDrive to Lips Turn Blue.  Why the name change and any insight to its meaning?
EB: Actually Phil was part of choosing the name Lips Turn Blue. It was our manager Bruce Pilato's idea based on a Bootsie Colllins song. He presented the idea and everyone agreed…including Phil.

CV: The new album's first single is "Pray for Tomorrow." Tell us a little about the song. Does its context parallel anything going on in the world today?
EB: It does and the new video that accompanies the song reflects today’s challenges. It's a beautiful song written by Phil and our guitarist Donnie Mancuso. It was actually the first song we recorded together. We were so happy with the outcome that it led to song 2 than 3 and eventually an entirely new album. The song really represents the hope for tomorrow and given all that is going on in our world today it couldn't be timelier.

CV: What can listeners expect from the new album? Will fans of DDrive find some familiar sounds or are there surprises in store for them upon first listen?
EB: The album covers the gamut from driving rock songs to some incredibly melodic ballads. Phil was such a great talent that he could vocally do it all. DDrive fans should find what they are looking for and more in the songs on the new album. We believe it won't disappoint. We were also fortunate to have some incredible guest musicians join us on the recording…some of the best in the business today!

CV: In addition to the upcoming new album, what more can fans expect to see coming from Lips Turn Blue in 2022 and beyond?
EB: We have begun to support the album playing out live, which feels really great after so many months where live music came to a standstill. We've also begun to work on new songs for the next album with Iggy at the vocal helm. We certainly hope that listeners will enjoy rocking out with the album and come out and see us when we are in town.

CV: Thanks again Eric for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
