Interview with Vocalist Gabriel Connor and Guitarist Luis Kalil of Red Devil Vortex

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Luis and Gabriel! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

Red Devil Vortex: Thanks for having us.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What’s the specific allure your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Luis Kalil: Definitely Gabriel's voice is something that already makes us sound different from most of the Hard Rock bands, plus I think the band always took chances sonically with riffs and great hooks, and from now on, we'll only keep expanding our musical boundaries.

Gabriel Connor: I believe we’re not afraid to try different things with our music and at the same time we’re just playing what we like to hear. We like to mix some melodies with a little chaos and now with Luis Kalil in the band we can only imagine how far we can take our music.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
Gabriel: I believe that once you’re on stage, you have to surrender your spirit to the power of music, understand where that energy is, and make sure everybody connects to it and have a great time…the band and the crowd working as one raging beast, Haha...just kidding.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
Luis: RDV's concept is also based on visuals, not only the music, because we want to transport the listeners to our world. For us, every bit of a piece of art is as important as the other. We wanna be the band that people don't know they wanted to hear, but they needed it.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
Gabriel: There are so many things in the music business you can’t control that the best option is to always be yourself and play the music you love, regardless of the outcome. What we do with Red Devil Vortex is to create things we’d love to see in our favorite band, and if people end up relating to that…it’s because it’s true to them too.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
Luis: I think it depends on your goal. If you wanna live life on your own terms and be the best artist you can, you gotta dedicate your life to it.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
Gabriel: Very much. In Red Devil Vortex, we create based on our life experiences and our personalities, and we try to express that in the most artistic way possible in our music, artwork and videos. Our energy as a band is much like how the music sounds.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
Luis: Songs come to us in different ways every time. But nothing beats a great melody supported by a beautiful chord progression. We care about the vibe! That's important too.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
Gabriel: Yes, we try every idea we think might be cool and we see where they take us. Sometimes the songs sound like we thought they would, sometimes they end up completely different.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
Luis: I think so. Our music speaks for itself I think.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
Gabriel: Our live performances are the most important part of what we do, and the Red Devil Vortex experience is about loud music, a big show and a lot of fun.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
Gabriel: We have a new EP coming out in October called “Dark Secrets”. Our new single, “Alive”, is the first song in the EP and we have a few more singles and videos before the record release and we’ll have concert dates soon.

Luis: We have this new EP coming out in 2021 and we also spent a lot of time writing more songs for a third record soon.

CV: Thank you Luis and Gabriel again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
