Interview with Abby K

by Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Abby K! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.
Abby K: Thank you so much for having me!

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style has that has people taking notice?
Abby K: I think what sets us apart is the wide range of sound that we like to incorporate. As a way to make music for a larger audience, we include lots of different elements from other genres to influence more people to listen.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
Abby K: I definitely believe a catchy hook grabs the audience's attention. For example, we have a few songs that we play at live shows, and even if the audience didn't know the song before hand, they are always singing along by the second chorus.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
Abby K: We have a very theatrical show. For us, it's only 50% about what we want the audience to hear. We really focus on what the audience sees. We spend a lot of time working on our stage presence and making sure we take up the whole stage. This definitely works well for us because we have great chemistry!

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
Abby K: I think this does motivate us because even though our parents aren't already in the industry, we don't have a huge budget, and for us, we live all over the country, it's still possible for us to make something out of this.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
Abby K: In my opinion, there are different tiers of success when it comes to music. It really all depends on commitment level. There are some that do this as a hobby throughout high school, and others do this for a living. There are definitely ways to have music be something in between.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
Abby K: We are like a fire on stage! We aim to never have a dull or boring moment.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
Abby K: We have always written songs differently. We have one rule; "song wins". We always create the best method for the specific song.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
Abby K: When recording, we actually almost always come out of the studio with a different song than what we went in with. There is something about getting in the studio with your bandmates that really just gets your creativity flowing. Why stop it?

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
Abby K: I'm not sure. One of my favorite descriptions of Abby K states that it's the lovechild of Lita Ford and Steve Harris! That's such an honor to hear!

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
Abby K: You expect to see musicians, but we try to be more than that. We are all performers. A concert is just as much visual as it is auditory. As of right now, our set is about 80% originals and 20% covers. We could never leave out Ace of Spades!

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
Abby K: We have just started working on our first album! We hope to have that out early 2022!

CV: Thank you again Abby K for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Abby K: Thank you!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
