Interview with the Band Random Ties

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, Yous, Ron and Jack, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!
Random Ties: Hey everyone!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Random Ties: Our songs are heavily influenced by great bands coming out of that 90’s grunge era such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters & Soundgarden to name a few we listen to many sorts of music.

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Random Ties: I think no matter what you do in life connecting with your audience is a big part of your success…they give you the power to get your music out there and reach even a bigger audience. That’s why you should start by knowing who your audience is.

Today as artists. we also have to listen to what our audience wants so it’s not just about music it’s about what your band stands for, your social media presence a swell.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Random Ties: Being a small national band, we still have the ability to connect with our fan base on a personal level & we really enjoy that and always look forward to seeing familiar faces when we hop into town.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Random Ties: Your connection with your fan base is on the music level and I think each band has their own boundaries and for us we don’t mix personal with music. A lot of our songs though touch on personal issues so we do feel that our followers know who we are and when they come up and tell us how this song changed their life or helped them get through a difficult situation is really gratifying.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Random Ties: I don’t believe so.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Random Ties: Bands that have international appeal tend to pull you in with their songs and appeal…so yes we do believe it helps.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Random Ties: The word musician today is a very undervalued currency because everyone now can release music whereas before the streaming channels were not as many and the labels had a lot of control.

Being an artist is never about fame or how many followers you have its creating art and that will never change.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
Random Ties: There are been very few artists who have set trends and those artists opened the door for other musicians to enter that space.

It’s also important to adapt to trends today to remain relevant.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
Random Ties: In our opinion music is music…now you might have new sub genres that come out but the roots will always be there, but at the same time pushing the boundaries of what music is.

CV: What can fans except to see coming next from you?
Random Ties: We just released our latest single, “They Don’t Care”... the song is inspired by the on-going conflict in Palestine and abuse of power in South America.

We wanted this song to raise the volume on social injustice.

CV: Thanks again Yous, Ron and Jack for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.
Random Ties: A big thank you to you for giving us a voice and to your readers!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
