Interview with Leonard Cerzosie Jr of the Band LeNNe

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Lenny! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

Lenny: Hello! Thank you for taking interest in chatting with us!

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Lenny: I think what sets us apart is that we didn’t initially plan on making this a “thing”. We started out as a studio project but the songs were just taking on their own shape and life. So, we were never thinking of a gimmick or sound. We just wrote and recorded what we were feeling. I think that kept our sound real & original as it developed.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
Lenny: I think sincerity is the key to what we’re doing. If you honestly feel the music yourself, the audience is more likely to, as well. We also write about real life experiences. For instance, we were originally writing songs about my mother. When we started LeNNe, my mother had recently passed away from ALS. We definitely got real personal and hope people can feel a connection.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does LeNNe go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
Lenny: As of this day, we have not gone live with LeNNe, yet. Our debut single, “Letting You Down”, came out this past May and we have shows being booked starting in the Fall. I hope I can bring an emotional intensity to our audiences. I always used music as an outlet for my personal issues. I hope people can come see us and let out some of their own angst inside.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
Lenny: Not really. It is extremely difficult to survive in the music business. That’s no lie. But I have found that most musicians are willing to sacrifice quite a bit just to be able to play and/or be heard. There are definitely many levels and ideas of success in this industry. But the level of success is often felt simply in the connection with people around the world through music you helped create. Now, that won’t pay the phone bill! LOL But you hope it evolves into something that does. And if you become a rock star in the process?? Gravy!! Ha!!

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
Lenny: There are definitely different ways to survive. So, as long as you’re okay not being super rich and famous, there are places to live in, musically.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
Lenny: We’re friends before bandmates. Everyone is light hearted & goofy but also anxious & serious when it’s time to be. I guess since we don’t focus much on image and actually dress pretty much the same on and off stage, our image aligns with our inward nature in that sense.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
Lenny: We typically begin with lyrics and start creating vocal sections. Then, the song’s vibe develops based on what emotions are being evoked by the words. We usually demo things out day one. Start real tracking day two. And usually finish by day three. However, we do bounce around studios. So, we often re-record parts multiple times based on different sets of ears and better performances as we sit with the songs a little bit.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
Lenny: We definitely just see where it goes. We do most of the writing in the recording studio and track as we write. The songs take on multiple forms before they find their final home.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
Lenny: I haven’t heard any critique yet that I felt was off at all. People have been very kind to us, thus far. There’s always someone willing to take the time to give a thumbs down or hit the dislike button. You kind of have to let that roll off your back otherwise you’ll go crazy. We do have some elements that make it difficult to describe our sound. We live in a very low tuning but I sing in a fairly standard range. We focus on melodies & big choruses with lots of ambience around heavy guitars and lots of keyboard presence.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
Lenny: Well, this particular lineup has not performed together live, yet. Our single, “Letting You Down”, was just released this past May. We have shows booked for the fall and winter. If they go half as well as our rehearsals, I think fans will enjoy the shows!

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
Lenny: We will have our next single, “Plastic”, released before the end of summer. Hopefully, another single in the Fall. Right now, we are focusing on getting on shows and making sure our live set is up to par for our audiences.

CV: Thank you again Lenny for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Lenny: It is very much appreciated! Thank you for helping spread our story and music!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
