Interview with Will Oaks Lead singer of ATRON
By Mick Michaels
COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.
CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands,
especially those of similar sound and style? What specific
allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Will Oaks: I think you could quite easily label us as a pop/rock-act if you
will, but as individuals we come from very different musical backgrounds which
makes our sound quite unique. Though the songs are simple and catchy, the
arrangements, feel and attitude sometimes takes you to an alternative
soundscape. I also think that my voice is a bit hard to label though…I neither
have a modern pop nor a classic rock sound. People either say I have a musical
or a soul influenced tone. Depending on the song, it’s going to have a specific
vibe and that’s the way I like it.
CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's
attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating
dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
WO: In a live performance, for instance, I think it’s important to remember
what “live” is all about. As a concert attendant you want to feel that what
you’re experiencing is happening right now and will never happen again. For
that to happen, you need dynamics and spontaneity. You don’t want to hear the
album all over again. You want there to be a certain energy in the air and you
want to feel excitement in your gut. I’d like to think that you can find the
same energy when you’re in the studio.
CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical
experience for your fans? And how does the band go about
creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band
wants to have on its audience?
WO: I think the only thing we can do is to follow our gut. If the music we
create gives us excitement and empowerment, hopefully the listeners will feel
the same thing. We just have to follow the muses wherever they take us. They’ve
been good to us thus far.
CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of
who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or
swim. Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives
itself to succeed?
WO: Again, I don’t think we have a choice but to write the music that we’re
meant to write. That’s part of who we are. What drives us is truly the music
itself.
CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is
it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
WO: I don’t think it’s ‘do or
die’. There are many different ways to be musically active in the music
industry today. I know many people who are successful but on different levels.
Some have a small but loyal following, others are stars. But to some extent
they’re all successful.
CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the
band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your
perspective?
WO: Since our internal energy is so strong when we’re creating and when
we’re hanging out, I think that that will affect our outward appearance.
CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting
approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to
take form and evolves?
WO: Well, the core is to write really good songs basically. How we get there
is not always clear from the start, hence the excitement in the songwriting and
producing sessions…that’s what’s exciting to me. You never know what the result
is going to be. Creating is searching.
CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where
a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a
song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
WO: Whenever you try to create a
structure you get stuck, in our book. I think the excitement lies in
experimenting and trying different angles…shortening, lengthening, different
instrumentations, different dynamics, screaming words out load, jamming,
programming, you name it. The sky is the limit.
CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music
accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
WO: Yes, and if not, it’s only
been interesting and fun to take part of their experience.
CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can
fans who have never seen you perform expect?
WO: We can promise an energetic
experience with lots of emotion and power. We will give you an intense yet
beautiful time. What you see on stage will be true and honest, right ‘here and
now’.
CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the
band?
WO: We’ll keep releasing new
singles throughout this year until we release our full length debut album,
‘Clouds’, in the beginning of 2023. Hopefully we’ll do some shows throughout
Europe and America in the fall. Fingers crossed!
CV: Thank you
again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish
you all the best and continued success.
