Interview with Singer Ralf Mueggler of BLEED THE S+ONE
By Mick Michaels
COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.
CV:
What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of
similar sound and style? What specific allure does your sound and style
have that has people taking notice?
Ralf
Mueggler: We are utilizing 8-string, down tuned. groove based simple
polyrhythmic metal with vocal melody, which I haven't heard much in music
recently so I think that will separate us from other bands for sure.
CV: For
any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel
is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to
bring something more to the music?
RM: Keeping
the listener involved and on a journey throughout the song keeps their
attention for sure. Having songs that drop down in intensity to build back up
again is important.
CV:
How would you describe the ultimate musical experience
for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical
vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its
audience?
RM: To be honest, we write songs that we enjoy and
think are as slamming as can be. Remember, we as musicians creating the music
are more importantly fans as well…I feel if we write a song that we think
is absolutely crushing, or makes us feel a particular emotion, we know the fans
will have a similar experience as well.
CV: The
music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you
came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim. Does this
type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
RM: Absolutely. It's a brutal industry for sure.
You have to be persistent and keep going to make it. I have been in the
industry for over 15 years with breaks here and there. I have realized that the
most important part is keeping the passion for the music you create and
that I don't expect to become huge or make millions. That way you can
concentrate on the art and that's ultimately why we do this.
CV:
In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die
climate in today's music industry?
RM: The industry is saturated like crazy with
modern technology. There are so many artists and songs available in this world
that it seems next to impossible to break through. I feel that with persistence
and consistency of writing and releasing music, you will naturally
establish fans and grow.
CV:
How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward
appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
RM: Our energy is great. Jason and I are adults
that have been through many experiences in and out of music and have mutual
respect for each other. We write music based on current events, emotions, or
whatever we are dealing with at that moment and we also understand that
life happens and it may take some time to get things accomplished which I
think contribute to the music that we end up creating.
CV:
What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there
certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and
evolves?
RM: To a certain degree....sure. Jason lives in
L.A. and I am in Las Vegas both with other careers. So how we write songs is a
bit unorthodox. I fly out to L.A. with Jason and we start hammering out ideas
based off a riff that either of us have in our head, or a drum groove that I
write at home and send him, etc. Then we program a drum part in Jason's studio
(he writes music and soundtrack for Film and TV) and start putting it all
together. Then after the basic song structure is complete, I record drums and
final bass. Then Jason finishes it up by re-recording over the scratch guitars we
had, I record vocals in Las Vegas with the wizard Chris Collier (KoRn, Prong,
KDH) and then he'll mix it. So during this process, the song
definitely takes form and evolves.
CV:
Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or
is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus,
essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
RM: The song
takes place as we get together and write during each session, which can have
some day to week breaks in between each time we get together. So there is time
to listen and analyze what we have done, that we may want to change this part
or move this riff etc. So for sure it's an ongoing process.
CV:
Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately
reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
RM: BLEED THE S+ONE is pretty new and just getting
our feet wet so we haven't received much feedback yet for the tunes. But
we try to just keep our heads in it and write songs that we think totally groove and
hopefully the listener does too.
CV:
What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
RM: We have written most of the EP due out in
November and are putting the final touches on the music. We are planning on
releasing a single every 7-9 weeks. And then hopefully getting some shows in
the works as well, so keep an eye out.
CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking
and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
RM: Absolutely. Thank you for chatting with me and
I hope we can do it again in the future. All the best!
