Interview with the German Band Emerra

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Emerra: We are all coming from a Metal background, and after trying a more soft and straight forward kind of Rock, we went back to our roots with a heavier and more progressive style of music.
CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Emerra: To be honest, Emerra is such a new project…we haven’t had much experience with fans yet. We had one show before the pandemic stroke, but that show was really awesome and gave us the first chance to connect with other people and bands.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?

Emerra: We think fan interaction has always been a part of Rock and Metal bands. And today it’s even easier with social media…it’s also more intimate to directly interact with fans and people who enjoy your music. We love getting feedback for our music and videos and share other bands music we love.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?

Emerra: I think bands who “gave up their personal space” are the ones on top of the line…like the headliners at Rock am Ring maybe. But we think Metal is still such a niche, that it’s unlikely to reach a status of fame that lets you give up parts of your private live.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?

Emerra: The pandemic showed that music and art are “not worthy to be supported in a healthy way” here in Germany. Many smaller venues are closing and many people working in the music industry are losing their jobs. We hope that other countries are taking the situation more serious and are supporting artists and people who made a living out of it.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?

Emerra: We think the American music industry makes it pretty hard for foreign bands to get a foot in the door. But thanks to the Internet and social media, we are able to connect with an international audience all over the world.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?

Emerra: It‘s definitely easier to get into making art and getting your art out into the world, which is great. Although in the end it still takes quality, creativity and good marketing to be successful. There is still no “easy mode” to be a star.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?

Emerra: The one is inspired by his creativity and the other is inspired by others creativity.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?

Emerra: People like to categorize…and they like to be different than others. So finding the one thing that sets you apart from others and making this into a sub genre seems to be a natural progress.

CV: What can fans except to see coming next from you?

Emerra: Right now we are working on our second EP that will be released in Q1 2021. With new music in the back, we are planning to make more music videos and hopefully, if the pandemic is over in 2021, play more shows.

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.

Emerra: Thank you very much!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
