Interview with Venus Fly Trap
The
Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The
Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with
us!
CV:
Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that
definition uniquely describe the music?
Venus Fly Trap: We have been described as “bladerunner Rock n Roll with dark acidic shades”...dark sonics for films in your mind. We are situated in the post Punk genre melded with electronic...think of Joy Division, the Doors, Chemical Brothers DNA intertwined with ours. Pounding electronics overlaid with a pincer movement of dark vox and needle point guitar, all overlaid with wax crayon colors to mesmerize and hypnotize you.

CV:
Today everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of
achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your
fans?
VFT: Well I think the best and most direct route is via gigs as you get an immediate reaction and you can interact with people usually via the merch table...when we get back to proper gigs...whenever that is.

CV:
Is fan interaction an important part of the bands inner culture?
VFT: You need interaction to help propel what you’re doing along, nothing is formed in a vacuum, you need comment, debate...it sparks interest.

CV:
Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal
privacy without crossing the line and giving up their personal space in your
opinion.
VFT: That depends on how you project yourself, you don’t need to give everything away, keep things back it gives you an air of mystery, it’s not necessary to tell the world everything.

CV:
Is music and its value viewed differently around the world in your opinion? if
so what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among
various cultures?
VFT: What you project will be perceived differently in various parts of the world, that’s what makes it interesting. Things that never occurred to you are picked up on and made important. This means there is more than one facet to what you are producing and has a lot more interest than a one dimensional artist.

CV:
Do you feel that has an international appeal will tend to connect more so to
American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band
over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
VFT: If you have a world view and an array of subject matter not just local issues or subjects, you will appeal to a wider audience and it’s always interesting to get an outside view...seeing things from a distance gives it more focus.

CV:
Has modern day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your
opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
VFT: The idea is the most important thing how you project that via whatever media is available, does not detract from having a good idea.

CV:
How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and
one who sets them?
VFT: If you do what you like rather than predicting what an audiences taste will be you are honest with yourself and you tend to have a longer career as you are creating your own audience.

CV:
Has music overall been splintered into too many sub genres in an effort to
appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements in actuality
weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
VFT: It’s all music...two sorts, good and bad.

CV: What can fans except to see coming next from you?
VFT: I have been in quite a few bands pre VENUS FLY TRAP as well as projects running alongside the band, which has been compiled on a recent release VENUS FLY TRAP/ALEX NOVAK-MERCURIAL CD/DL(GLASS RECORDS MODERN), it is a best of VFT and other bands, projects including ISAWS, RELIGIOUS OVERDOSE, TEMPEST, ATTRITION, NOVA STATE CONSPIRACY, THE DEN and SPORE. My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word. Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
