Interview with the Rock Band Dirty Money

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Dirty Money: We’re a modern blend of classic and contemporary rock best summed up as bold, brash and ballsy.

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Dirty Money: I think it’s not only achievable but essentially for any band or artist. Ultimately, music is about expression and how that resonates with the audience. Without that, you have no audience. The way we make the connection just comes from being honest. We don’t try to force our music or cater to anyone, we’re just honest with ourselves and it just connects.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Dirty Money: Yes and no. We love it when people like what we do and have a good time but really we just love making music together whether it’s in a studio or at a gig or wherever. We’re all about having a good time. If the audience has a good time with us, all the better…life’s way too serious to not have fun.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Dirty Money: Yeah of course you can. I think where the lines get blurred is that modern artists when they’re starting these days are so desperate to get a footing that they give too much of themselves away to public scrutiny and when they do get where they want to be, it’s already too late and they have to carry on. What goes into your music is always your emotion and inner thoughts and how could you let someone into your personal space any more than that? It’s enough.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Dirty Money: I think it’s viewed differently amongst individuals and not necessarily cultures. There are so many genres of music that really there’s something for everybody and different genres are going to resonate with different people. Music is always an individual experience.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Dirty Money: No, I wouldn’t think so. If that is the case you’re going for a spectacle and not the music.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Dirty Money: How do you define an artist? Van Gogh sold one painting out of over 900 in his lifetime and became famous after he died so then it can’t be about being commercial. So what it comes down to, again, is self expression and resonance. Technology has given people more tools to use but the creativity still has to be there.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
Dirty Money: I think the main difference is there are lots of people who follow trends aren’t honest with themselves. If you’re following a trend because you want something to sell or you just want to be a part of something that’s already happening, that’s not an artist, that’s an impressionist. I don’t think an artist deliberately sets out to start a trend. What you’ll find is that most times, they’re just being themselves and then people who don’t connect with current mainstream ideas find them and they click and then it grows from there.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?

Dirty Money: Man, that’s a hang up of modern society. Everyone wants to be different so they give themselves labels and sub labels just to be seen as unique but what they don’t realize is that just by being you, you’re already unique. Why would you ever tie yourself to any one thing? People are such a complex tapestry of so many different aspects that no two people can fit in to the same mold. Same goes for you music. You can say you’re anything you like musically but that’s not going to make you any better or worse. People just want to belong and yeah, you can try and belong to a label or a type but if you don’t connect to it, what’s the point? Just enjoy what you enjoy.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
Dirty Money: World Domination…and we’ve got a studio EP coming out in October and a live one too.

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
