Interview with Paul Crosby of ColdWards

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello, Paul and Welcome to The Cosmick View!

CV: What do you feel sets ColdWards apart from other bands, especially those of similar genre? What specific allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?

Paul Crosby: What sets us apart from other bands is the fact that we are a band that consist of a father and sons, and that we approach our songwriting with no preconceived ideas or notions, we just write what comes out naturally and I think that makes us different enough that it captures people's attention.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?

PC: All five members of this band have extremely different musical influences and I think that allows us to have a similar but unique sound that sets us apart from a lot of other bands out there.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does ColdWards go about executing that musical vision to generate the impact it wants to have on the audience?

PC: I think this falls right in line with our musical creativity approach, we’re all just so dynamically different, but somehow it works, and makes for a unique and interesting experience, both in our songwriting, and our live performances.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?

PC: Not at all, because the fact that myself and my sons are in a band together, creating music and having it heard by the masses already makes us successful in our view. That’s all we ever really wanted out of this band and we’ve already achieved that so everything else that happens from this point is just icing on the cake for us.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band in the industry or is it a do or die climate in today's music business?

PC: I think every band's vision of where they want to go is unique to that particular band. So, as long as you are accomplishing the goals that you set out to do then you are successful in your own right.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does its outward appearance align with the true inward nature from your perspective?

PC: The band's internal energy is fiercely creative and dedicated to being ourselves naturally, and making whatever comes out of it work instead of trying to emulate other bands. Some of our music definitely has undertones of bands we are influenced by but that is not intentional at all.

CV: What's at the core of your songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?

PC: When we are writing songs, one of us will have the initial ideal, and then we each work on molding that into something that we feel will connect with people. We rarely have preconceived song ideas; we usually just write what comes out of his naturally.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?

PC: We are strong believers that songs impact people differently than others, a song may mean something to you and mean something completely different to someone else. So we like to leave them open for personal interpretation by the listener.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for ColdWards...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?PC: We try to put off as much energy as possible and connect with the fans on that level and we also try to perform the songs as accurately as the recordings as possible.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from Coldwards in the near future?

PC: We just released the first single called “Bad News” from our upcoming five-song EP. We will be periodically releasing singles and then will release the full EP in late spring of 2024.
