Interview with Former Britny Fox Vocalist Tommy Paris
By Mick Michaels
Cosmick
View: Hello, Tommy! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thanks for taking some time out
of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.
CV:
Do you think everything that can be done in music has been done as many critics
say or believe? Or do you feel the creative process lends itself to the
contrary. Are there still things to say and do?
Tommy Paris: I don’t believe everything’s been done
in music. I was really inspired to write my new album “erthearz” (available at
tommyparis.com) and I really enjoyed the process. A lot of people who’ve bought
the album, said they like it because it’s a bit different from what they
expected. I’m pleased with the results. It’s not like inventing fire or
anything so I understand why critics say things like that but it’s a heartfelt
project I undertook with great joy and care; all in the pursuit of creating
something new.
CV: Do critics and what they have to say bother you at all you when it comes to
writing new music or planning your career.
TP: A dear friend of mine who owns a record label
was told by his accountant, “stop making albums” which I suppose is apropos for
the current, clogged nature of the music business but at the end of the day,
you have to do what you love and be yourself cause that’s all you’ve got.
CV: Tell us a little about being both a solo artist and a member of a band. How
do you feel things are different?
TP: Both are mostly the same because in Count’s 77
and in my solo band, I’m still just a member of a band.
CV: As a veteran artist, you know that dynamics are the key to grabbing an
audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient for an artist to
having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the
music for the listener?
TP: That is a known unknown. Having excitement to
sing the material in the show is a great start.
CV: More and more, we are hearing both seasoned and newer artists saying that
to succeed in this business it is all about who you know…is there any truth in
such claims? If so, is this a relatively new thing or has it always been this
way? What can artists do to get a leg up to such opposition?
TP: Jeez, if you know someone who wants to jump
onboard, let me know!
CV:
In your opinion, is there a middle ground for an artist or band in the industry
or is it a do or die climate when it comes to making a career in today's music
business?
TP: I have no idea. It’s a tough business for
everyone but the top folks. Carry on soldiers….
CV: What have you found drives you to succeed as an artist?
TP: No clue. Some sick, twisted, torturous death
wish…LOL.
CV: What's been the greatest lesson you learned being in an artist?
TP: Be yourself ‘cause that’s all you have.
CV: In addition to your upcoming show at the legendary Whisky Ago-go, what more can fans expect to see coming from you in the remainder 2023 and beyond?
TP: More live shows and eventually a live album.
CV: Thanks again, Tommy for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best and continued success.
TP: Thank you Mick! Cheers!
