Interview with Vocalist Wilfried Bess of the Doolin' (France)

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello, Will! Welcome to
The Cosmick View. Thanks for taking some time out of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.

Wilfried Besse: Hi! This is Will, singer of the French band Doolin’.

CV: What do you feel is the allure your music has over competing artists and bands in your genre? What has them taking notice in your opinion?

WB: I honestly think that Doolin’s music and sound are unique because we have a foreign approach. The roots of the music we play are not from our native country. We probably allow ourselves things that Irish or American bands wouldn’t...in terms of fusion with plenty different styles of music.

CV: Do you think internet radio is a valuable resource as a modern mainstream outlet for both upcoming and established artists? If so, why and if not, why not?

WB: From my point of view, you can’t overlook anything in terms of artistic information coming from internet. I was child in the 80’s and we had TV and actually very good indie radio shows. Today we have internet. It’s faster and wider and it seems to me everybody can take a chance at it.

CV: In your opinion, can an artist truly be independent given an industry that relies heavily on big budgets and massive fan appreciation?

WB: If you’re at ease on a stage, if you don’t mind travelling, if you don’t need lots of money and above all if the music you play is your oxygen then I reckon’ that you can be independent...not easy...there are lots of worthy sacrifices but I’d say yes.

CV: Tell us a little about your current project?  What can listeners expect to hear? What makes it stand out in your opinion?

WB: Our new and 5th album is called “Circus Boy” and was released on the 3rd of March this year. It’s been recorded mainly in the 70’s legendary Studios Ferber (Paris) though we started recording bits in Chicago, Kansas City and Pittsburgh (USA). Compared to previous ones there are more songs...less instrumental tunes, and more of ourselves in it. I’d say it’s a mix of acoustic Folk and Pop with a hint of Irish music as a common thread and meant for a wider audience than the albums before.

CV: Music has a way of expressing things that words sometimes seem to fail at. How has music helped you better express yourself?

WB: I was quite shy and was lacking self confidence when I was young. It’s a massive cliché but it’s been a real therapy for me. Give me a mic and a good song and I’ll feel at home...sometimes the best version of myself. Music has this universality to it. You can touch peoples’ hearts with the right chords and melody if you’re true and at what you’re doing in the very moment...definitely stronger than words.

CV: What do you feel your music is saying to the world? And do you feel that message is being heard?

WB: Our music is filled with love in every kind of way. Love for life, love for a girl/boy-friend, love for a child, love for our passion, love for our band’s adventures, love for our audience and love for our friends and families.

We try to make every concert a gift of emotions and energy to our public and it seems to be coming back at us the right way.

CV: What do you believe your greatest asset is as an artist? How have you seen that asset benefit yourself and others?

WB: I’d say our greatest asset is the energy we render on stage and the fact of being a real band. Everyone’s really involved and wants each show to be the best one.

CV: What more can fans expect to see coming from you in the near future?

WB: We’re actually working on adapting some of the new tracks on stage, looking forward to the US summer tour we’ll be doing from end of July until mid September.

We’re planning on releasing a song from the new album as a third single with a video clip but can’t tell you much more as it’s top secret.

CV: Thanks again Will for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best and continued success.

WB: You’re very welcome. We hope the answers are clear enough despite our Frenchness. All the best to you too.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
