Interview with Opera Metal Band Lieder Distortion

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Lieder Distortion: Opera rock, symphonic rock, opera metal. The unique thing is that we don't just sound opera-influenced, but all the music we play is old opera arias and classical music. So we don't really write music, but rearrange music by Mozart, Vivaldi, Schubert, etc

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Lieder Distortion: I have several different music projects and what I do mostly as my own person, I'm very open and chat with people, bring up ideas and the like…it's great fun. Then I have another anonymous project where I only have Bandcamp and no social media at all. It also works. Lieder Distortion will not come up with new material all the time so everything takes a little longer. Therefore, it is not optimal for posting all the time. It will be in periods, but we are glad when people get in touch or write to us

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Lieder Distortion: I don't feel like I have to sit and comment on bands I like on their social media. I listen to the music

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Lieder Distortion: I have also thought a lot about that. Do you really want to know everything? I don't think so and I think anonymous will become the new aspirational thing

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Lieder Distortion: I think so but I don't really know much about it

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Lieder Distortion: Yes, I think so, but I don't feel anything like that.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Lieder Distortion: Yes it has, life has become the artistry in some way. Actually, I think there is a lot of good in it. Other professions and skills that are not a stage act get a platform. If you are good at farming, math, philosophy, health care or fixing cars, you can be an artist or at least get a lot of audience.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
Lieder Distortion: The one who sets the trend usually does the hard work and they are often followed by the ones who come soon after who get value for it. Those who set trends usually get appreciation, but it usually takes a while.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
Lieder Distortion: The range is probably so massive that it has to be spread out in many channels (subgenres). Everything is very fragmented, but on the other hand, I prefer several small ones (decentralized) than a few giants that control everything, which unfortunately is also a parallel development....

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
Lieder Distortion: The next single will be released on March 24 and it will probably be recognized by everyone…a very famous classical song.

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.
Lieder Distortion: Thank you and have a nice day.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
