Interview with Bassist Vincent Niclou of Scarlet Anger
By Mick Michaels
COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Vincent! Welcome to TheCosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
CV: Do you feel Heavy
Metal music in general is viewed differently by fans in Europe compared to
fans elsewhere, especially in America, and if so why?
Vincent Niclou: I
don’t think so. I mean Metal was and ever will be a worldwide family. Maybe
some fans are more exhilarated when they get the possibility to watch bands live,
which aren’t traveling that often overseas (in both
directions).
CV: What do you feel makes Heavy Metal music so alluring to the
fans? What is it about the music that personally resonates so strongly with
you?
VN: As said
before, it’s a bit like a worldwide family. If you travel and you see someone
with a metal shirt, for example in an gas station, you get a feeling that
you’re directly linked to that person even that you don’t know him.
CV: Has
Metal splintered into too many sub-genres in your opinion, thus, making it
harder for newer bands to actually classify themselves as one style over
another? Is it confusing for fans as
well?
VN: First of
all, it’s confusing if you wanna explain our genres to a person outside our
world. For many people Metal is only growling chants, but actually, it isn’t. I
always say it’s a bit like Jazz, there are also many subgenres. But personally,
I listen to (metal) music I like, doesn’t matter if a new band or legendary old
band and the genre they’ve given to themselves.
CV: How would you describe the
current state of the music business considering we are now living in a COVID aware, and maybe even feared
world? Have things drastically changed long-term for artists and bands given
the recent pandemic? What are your thoughts?
VN: As we’re
only semi-professionals with day jobs, the COVID situation hasn’t got a big
influence on our future. Of course, we couldn’t play live, but I think
professionals those don’t have the status like Maiden, Priest, Metallica, etc. have
to calculate at the moment much more to avoid that a tour doesn’t end in a
financial disaster.
CV: What do you feel makes your
band and its particular approach to songwriting work? What keeps the band
together and making music?
VN: Friendship
and living a dream of a rockstar which we aren’t ;).
CV: On a more global view, how
do you see your band’s music and songwriting separating itself from just being
another Heavy Metal act?
VN: Good
question, but I’m not a guy who’s comparing our music to someones else’s. For
us it is always important to get some melodies and a good chorus in each song,
doesn’t matter how aggressive the song itself is.
CV: Can an artist truly be
unique? Some would argue there is no such thing as being unique; that it’s
nothing more than a compounding of influences making an artist who or what they
are. Would this then say that artists today are destined to be just copies of
those who have already come to pass?
VN: If
you’re a very extrovert band, yes I think it’s still possible. Just look for
example the style of Lady Gaga. But for us, it’s not a big thing if someone
tells me that our music has existed before. Metal is around for nearly 50 years,
so that normal I think.
CV: Are there life lessons to
learn being in a Heavy Metal band that you feel cannot be taught elsewhere? If
so, what are they?
VN: Life in
a band is actually not only playing gigs or rehearsing, it’s far more. There’s
many to organize especially than you’re not fully professionals. We do
everything on ourselves. So, you’ll learn how to work hard to get a little
success.
CV: What do you feel makes
someone a “rock star”? Does being a
rock star automatically make one iconic or are the two completely different in
your opinion?
VN: I’ve
never thought about that. So what to say…maybe, a rock star who is also a nice
pal is an icon for me.
CV: What's next for you? What
can fans expect to see coming as the world looks to surmount a new normal laced
with a load of restrictions?
VN: Over
here in Luxembourg (Europe) there are no more restrictions at all. The only
thing nowadays, the bands have to double check if a tour is financially
possible or not.
CV: Thank you again Vincent for spending some time talking and sharing with our
readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
VN: It was a pleasure,
cheers.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word. Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
