Interview with Vocalist Megan Orvold of Casket Robbery

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Megan! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

CV: Do you feel that it's still possible for an unknown band today to be plucked out of obscurity and make it to stardom? Can a dedicated core of fans sharing their music make that possible or has the internet and social media changed the game?
Megan Orvold: Oh, absolutely, I think it still happens. Is it usually the case? No. And “stardom” in our genre or metal in general has multiple connotations at this point I think. It all depends on your definition of stardom and success. I think that the internet and social media has definitely changed the game in the industry, and if you use it to your strengths it can definitely benefit bands. We have the most loyal, amazing, family of fans that their support has helped us progress and is a key to where we are at right now.

CV: Do you feel that given the accessibility and social awareness of modern times that a music underground still even exists today as it once did?
MO: As it once did? Probably not, in all honesty. Things are definitely changing and access to social media, and access to streaming sites have definitely changed how underground bands function, but there still is a very active underground scene in metal and I believe there always will be…it’s a big part of the genre as a whole and I don’t see what going away. But it will continue to adapt and evolve over time.

CV: What do you see as the biggest difference in music and how it is perceived from back say 35 years ago compared to music today? Has both the music and the artist evolved from your point of view?
MO: I think the accessibility for one. Streaming platforms have kind of made so much music so accessible to everyone and that’s really cool. You’re able to find a lot of lesser known bands that way.

CV: Do you believe bands and artists who have the biggest impact on fans and other artists are aware that they are or is there more of a tunnel vision sort of process for them keeping them somewhat in the dark? Can influential artists see past their own work to be aware of the ripples they make?
MO: That’s a really interesting question and kind of hard to answer. I think there is somewhat of a tunnel vision process in the beginning, I for one, am always blown away when we receive a message about what our music has done for people...surprises me every time.

CV: Does music need to be influential to be considered worth listening to in your opinion? Or can music simply be just an enjoyable auditory experience devoid of substance?
MO: I think it depends on the mood! I think there are no rules, there are moods for both of those to co-exist

CV: The world has been rocked by the COVID pandemic.  The economy has been sent into a tailspin in its wake, unfortunately.  Bands worldwide have been restricted on some levels from performing live and for some it seems, restricted from earning a living.  How has the pandemic affected your band? Are you hopeful that 2022 will see many of the restrictions lifted?
MO: It’s been a really hard year and a half. We’ve had multiple tours canceled and we were all looking forward to all of them. It’s really taken a toll on all of our mental health. I wasn’t aware of just how important that outlet was of playing live, but it truly is a hole that is missing. We have really locked down with writing new music, launching our Patreon, and working very hard on building and continuing to build our relationships with our fans throughout all of this. I am hopeful for 2022 but for now, it still seems a bit murky.

CV: What do you feel artists and bands can do right now to stay relevant, especially in an environment, such as the present, where performing in front of a live audience is being restricted? What immediate options do you see available?
MO: Really being able to adapt and try new things online. Patreon, using Discord, looking into all of that. Live-streaming if you are able to. And really just keep creating and releasing content.

CV: As an artist, what have you learned from the events of 2020? Are those lessons learned different for you as a person than as an artist or are they one in the same in your opinion?
MO: I’ve learned to not take things for granted, and to allow myself some rest when I need it. I think it’s one in the same, things have to all function well together to make the personal and the art work.

CV: What's next? What can fans expect to see coming in 2021?
MO: We have already released a single The Hidden…The Hideous, and we are working on getting another single and video out this year! Hoping to hit the road as soon as possible in this New Year and keep releasing new music!

CV: Thank you again Megan for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was such a pleasure. I wish you all the best.
MO: Thank you so much!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
