Interview with the Band The Midnight Preachers

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

Midnight Preachers: Thank you for having us on and giving us the platform to talk about our music.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style has that have people taking notice?

Midnight Preachers:
We get compliments on our song writing – people comment that it’s a throwback to the 70s but mixed with something new. What we try to do is avoid the trappings of quantizing and things like that – keep things fresh, and honest.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?

Midnight Preachers:
Dynamics are very important to us; most of our songs have many ups and downs, lots of crazy loud madness and lots of dreamy soundscapes. The album, ‘Soul Food’ is full of moments like this. For us, it’s definitely important, and it reflects us as human beings. That might be part of the reason it’s relatable.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?

Midnight Preachers:
As music fans ourselves, we’d take anything at the moment – given the pandemic etc. but I think it’s about just experiencing live music and reality, human nature, warts and all…just that feeling of giving in to the music.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?

Midnight Preachers:
No. We understand that people approach things differently, but we’re trying to create what we like to hear ourselves – so what we’re doing is trying to adhere to our own tastes, which we obviously think are pretty good.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?

Midnight Preachers:
Without getting too philosophical, if it’s about making great music, then there is no do or die. If it’s about making money, there are lots of bands that have spent years climbing up the ladder and sometimes they do make it after a few albums. Fame, money etc. with that said, there are so many famous artists, musicians, composers etc who were never *recognized* but are iconic, so I think it depends on what you’re trying to achieve.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?

Midnight Preachers:
There is natural chemistry for sure. What we’ve put out so far has been the calm before the storm; our ‘true inward nature’ is going to be coming out in full force over the next few months.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolve?

Midnight Preachers:
For us, songwriting has always been a deeply collaborative process – and this openness of conversation when writing has steered us in a certain direction. We don’t strategize or put limitations on the writing process; the songs flow naturally and then it’s in the producing stages that we may fine tune or expand an idea.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?

Midnight Preachers:
Definitely allow it to progress naturally without thinking ‘it’s time for a middle 8’ or whatever. Those things happen too obviously. There’s a reason the formula works, but it can’t be applied to everything. With that said, it has to serve the song and not some protocol.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?

Midnight Preachers:
We’ve been pleasantly surprised at some of the descriptions of our music. I think what it is, is that art gets to people in different ways. Classic Rock made a statement about us being a mix between Rory Gallagher and the Dead Weather so that was quite cool. We love Rory, naturally, given where we’re from.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
Midnight Preachers:
A lot of noise. We like to go on trips – up and down, different directions…surprises.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?

Midnight Preachers:
We’ve yet to perform so many tracks from our debut album - as they were written during the pandemic, so we’re hoping people enjoy what they hear.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

Midnight Preachers:
Thank you very much.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
