Interview with the Band The Spider Accomplice

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
ARNO: I think we utilize different kinds of instruments in our music. For example Mellotron, synths and strings to have a slightly different kind of atmosphere in our music.

VK: Also, my vocals tend to have a blues influence, which makes it a little different from what you’d usually hear with our instrumentation.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
ARNO: Use the dynamics often and in surprising places of a song.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
ARNO: We try to have a sound no other band has, and we try to write songs that have a wide spectrum of feels, hopefully always bringing something new on the table.

VK: I tend to compose lyrics from places of struggle or pain, but then offer hope. The goal is for the listener to feel seen and to experience some type of empathy or catharsis.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
ARNO: Mostly, we just write songs that make us happy. We don't feel the pressure to write and perform in a certain style. Just do the opposite of what you think the public wants :).

VK: I actually think that take is more idealism than realism. At its core, the business part of music is just that - business. We try to keep our writing process separate from those concerns as much as possible, but when it comes time to promote or market, we remember that there are no rules in today’s culture, only goals.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
ARNO: I don't think there's a do or die climate. There are many ways to become a successful musician, especially nowadays, when most of the tools are in the hands of the bands themselves.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
ARNO: I think it does align. We want to be the best we can, and improve all the time and we hope it shows.

VK: Yes, Arno and I are here for the music, and we both know there is nothing like the energy that comes from making and performing music, so we put all that passion into both.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
ARNO: There are many ways to write songs, and it's important to do so…to achieve something different than we'd done previously. And when the song has its core, it's important to make it dynamic, and add elements we haven't done before.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
ARNO: Yes, it's important to let things happen when writing. And it's important to go back and listen to the ideas, and be objective if the song has a future or not. And ask yourself: "What would I like to hear if I was a listener"'

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
ARNO: Yes' I think so.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
ARNO: A show must have dynamics, and different kinds of songs to keep the show interesting. We want to start and end with more intensity and energy. A show is like a movie or a book; Introduction and Conclusion are the most important parts. But without a great story, they won't save the day :). We try to play the best songs we have with the feeling that people will remember for a long time.

VK: Visually, we present a metaphor - I am the small, spinning spider, raging with and against the thunder of the music of life.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
ARNO: The band is evolving, and the songs and the sound are evolving…keeping high standards with songwriting and great live shows...always better than yesterday.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
