Interview with the Band Defiant

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style has that has people taking notice?
Defiant:  I think our ability to relate to everyone in the audience on a personal level.  We include the audience in our shows.  We talk directly to them.  We touch on a lot of feelings and emotions in our lyrical content that people can relate to and maybe are already feeling but don't know how to express it.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
Defiant:  Defiant has always been careful not to have a formula.  We don't limit ourselves within our song writing.  Dynamics are a huge part of that.  We touch on metal, doom, punk...and can change courses within the same song.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
Defiant:  I think the ultimate musical reality is to be entertained but also feel like what you are witnessing is authentic.  When you see a Defiant show...everything you see and hear is us...raw and full of energy.  All instruments are played live on stage.  When we make mistakes we laugh at them...we make it part of the show.  I think at the end of the day fans want to hear good music that makes them move but feel like the people on the stage are just like them.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
Defiant: Obviously we are well aware of the business side of being in a band.  It is far from easy these days in the current environment.  However, the day we truly see Defiant as simply a job or business is the day we should walk away.  We write and play music because it's a release from our real lives and is fun.  Any success that has and will come from that is truly icing on the cake.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
Defiant: It all depends on what you want to get from it.  There are so many levels that success can be judged on.  And who are we to judge another band or person's vision of success.  We believe in our music and we will do whatever is necessary to explore how far that can take us.  Taking risks whether in song-writing or business decisions is what drives us.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
Defiant: Off stage we are pretty laid back normal guys.  I think some people are often surprised to hear what comes out of us musically and the energy on stage.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
Defiant: Sonically we try not to limit ourselves.  We don't write to click tracks or metronomes.  We just write what we think sounds good and find a way to make it work as a band.  Lyrically, Albert draws a lot of his inspiration from literature, history and current events.  It may not always be a specific storyline but an emotion or a feeling brought about by something he has seen or read about.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
Defiant: Typically a member will come to the band with a riff or piece of music and then we spend time rounding it out with all of the parts.  Al then puts a vocal melody and lyrics to the piece of music.  Again we try not to limit ourselves by a genre.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?

Defiant:  I think critics and fans know what they get from Defiant...raw, real, heavy and full of emotion...but we hope we can continue to throw some curveballs at them.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
Defiant: Expect to move your body, bang your head, smile, laugh and walk away entertained and like you just met 4 new friends.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
Defiant:  Right now we are going to work "The Rent Is Hell" album cycle by playing as many shows in different markets as possible.  We are currently working on filming the video for the second single from the release as well.  Then as 2021 winds down I am sure we will be working on moving towards release number 3 in 2022.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Defiant: Thank you...it was our pleasure and we appreciate the time spent with us!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
