Interview with Dig Two Graves

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Dig Two Graves: I think it’s hard to define our style because we don’t really set out to do anything specific. I think we just vibe and see what happens. I think we just try to be what we’d want to watch. You have to think about what’s missing from music in your opinion, and try to become it.
CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
DTG: With social media it is now easier than ever to connect with fans which is one of the most positive aspects of it. We try to post often to update everyone with what we’re up to and interact with people as much as possible. It is very helpful to have online platforms to connect with everyone who is a fan of our music.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
DTG: Yes, very much. This is true on our social media pages and at any of our shows. We always make an effort to communicate with audience members after our sets. It's always a good experience to interact with people who enjoy what we do.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
DTG: Yes it definitely can. We always want our fans to know what we plan on doing as a band but we do not really give out any personal information. It's important for fans to feel connected with the band but it’s not necessary to delve into the members’ personal lives.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
DTG: I think music is definitely enjoyed differently around the world. For instance, people in South America go absolutely nuts at shows, and it’s awesome.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
DTG: I think the intrigue is definitely there. I think especially British or Japanese bands tend to command a lot of attention for being unique.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
DTG: To some degree this is definitely the case and to an extent it is easier than ever to be an “artist” due to social media and the internet. Who is considered an artist always has been and always will be subjective to some extent but it is possible that the lines have been blurred slightly.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
DTG: I think it’s just about doing what you want to do because you want to do it rather than setting out to do anything. I’m just concerned about writing music that is authentically us. If that follows trends and/or sets new ones then so be it.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
DTG: We believe it has and to the point where some sub-genres are so similar it can be hard to differentiate between them. We think it can potentially cause confusion among listeners, especially those new to Rock and Metal music. There are so many slight variations among so many genres and sometimes it can be difficult to classify bands due to too many specifications between sub-genres. As a band, we decided to now classify ourselves as Rock and Roll instead of getting super specific.

CV: What can fans
expect to see coming next from you?
DTG: We are currently working on our debut full length album and we’re stoked with how it is coming out! Also, on July 18th we are dropping a remix of our song “Wick” so be on the lookout for that!

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
