Interview with UK Artist Lemzi
By Mick Michaels
Cosmick View: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thanks for taking some time out of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.
CV: What
do you feel is the allure your music has over competing artists and bands in
your genre? What has them taking notice in your opinion?
Lemzi: I like to create experiences with what I do. More than just a song, I
like to bring art. And more than anything I've got my own balance of soul, rap
and spoken word, stemming from a grime background.
I think they take notice because I've got something different to say. I approach the most obvious topics like relationships or social things distinctively and then my introspection will always be unique to me. My story is about a lot of things but ultimately, authenticity, creativity, experimenting and resilience...,"If you want proof to keep going, I'm your case study"....
CV: Do you
think internet radio is a valuable resource as a modern mainstream outlet for
both upcoming and established artists? If so, why and if not, why not?
Lemzi: I think anywhere that genuinely invests in and supports artists is a
valuable space. Giving artists and more importantly, their art, an avenue to be
revered and properly respected is good. But, I'd be lying if I said I
listened to radio that much.
CV: In
your opinion, can an artist truly be independent given an industry that relies
heavily on big budgets and massive fan appreciation?
Lemzi: Yeah there are loads of independent artists that are creating a name
and lane for themselves, living out their ambitions. You've named the 2
machines; money machine and people machine. I've seen people growing off the
back of just one but you need both realistically and neither are completely
dependent on labels. But I also don't look at these labels like the evil
corporations now, if it works for you let it run!
CV: Tell
us a little about your current project? What can listeners expect to
hear? What makes it stand out in your opinion?
Lemzi: It's the first CP aka Creative Project to exist so that's one thing.
Aside from that, the 3 chapters give a real insight into how I interpret music,
taking influences from abstract poetry to hip hop to garage to ambient vibes. The
music is about anything from my own mental wellbeing to emotional resilience
and dark stories to turnin’ up with friends to
practicing mindfulness. In other words, there's a lot happening in this
neat album...audio book format for listeners
CV: Music
has a way of expressing things that words sometimes seem to fail at. How has
music helped you better express yourself?
Lemzi: It really helps me channel certain feelings. Music evokes things within
me that I struggle to get out on my own, however, the beauty of my relationship
to music now is that I appreciate how much of a tool it is to help me in
life as opposed to just this career or purely entertainment. Whether I'm
writing or listening, music is the connector and convo starter. It pushes me
and keeps me inspired, but also provides moments of ease.
CV: What
do you feel your music is saying to the world? And do you feel that message is
being heard?
Lemzi: "Music is a medicine I'm tryna show ‘em rap cures"...anyone,
no matter the genre, hopefully feels one way when they start listening to
something I've contributed to/made and feels another way ...or enhanced their
feelings, when they're finished.
I hope my music shows liberty and freedom in your art. Not being a perfectionist, just pushing ourself to be great. That's with my own music or of course, what we make at SPOKE - the UK's number one artist-led mindfulness app.
CV: What
do you believe your greatest asset is as an artist? How have you seen that
asset benefit yourself and others?
Lemzi: Probably how I create a safe space for people. That could be at live
shows or even how my music is so me, it allows the listener to really be
themselves ...someone said this to me anyway. Hopefully that's always good but
I know that's not the case, but either way, feel safe to be yourself when you take
me in
CV: What
more can fans expect to see coming from you in the near future?
Lemzi: More music and even other writing styles like a book, that's the aim.
Definitely some shows abroad too, want to leave London a few times this year.
Also anyone reading; you've gotta download SPOKE for the UK's leading app for
music & mindfulness. And make sure you follow what's happening at In-Facts;
we're developing the sickest creative community around London and the UK. Be a
part of it all
CV: Thanks
again for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best
and continued success.
Lemzi: Love for having me on! Make sure you check out "Outliers - A
Creative Project by Lemzi" - It's not a playlist or an LP. It's
not a mixtape or an EP, it's a CP.
