Interview with Bryant August of Atrium

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello,
Bryant! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Bryant August: We heard feedback in a recent interview that we have a unique soundscape for a vocal tone.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
BA: I feel like the main ingredient is the frequency and tempo. You have a driving tempo or just a groove, which can be the extreme of two different directions.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
BA: We feel like the experience this far is the visual mixed with audio…the music video. It takes lots of thought, and planning. After the song is written and recorded, it makes sense to follow the guidance of the song order to build a story board and arrangements on the script.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
BA: We are just getting started as a brand new project. We all know the industry, because we all have other projects. We know the risk of sinking or swimming, and it is real. The most positive approach is to keep swimming and don't stop, if you start to sink.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
BA: I think there are lots of bands with a middle ground. We are all trying to reach as many listeners as possible…with hopes to gain the fan base. The biggest hurdle is not the music creative, it is post-music release promotion.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
BA: I feel like we are all very true and professional with the energy and approach. We want to deliver song messages that relate to real world problems that should absolutely be questioned.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
BA: The songwriting approach starts with the feeling of a guitar, which is followed by a melody and lyrics. Once the unknown drum arrangement is developed, then things can change. Sometimes it can stay the same. Everything is re-recorded from the scratch tracks after drums are recorded and edited, so there's always opportunity for change in guitars and vocal placements. That's what great about the song evolving in these moments.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
BA: The original starting point has a certain direction, then we see where the song goes, letting things just happen.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
BA: So far I think the description is complimenting and positive. I think it is an accurate reflection of questioning real world issues.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?

BA: We are currently working on more music, so we should be performing at concert events in a few months. Maybe in the Fall after we release more music that can be arranged into a set.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
BA: We have another single with a music video that is almost ready to go. We will be releasing that in a few months.

CV: Thank you again Bryant for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
BA: Thank you so much for having us.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
