Interview with Vocalist and Guitarist Sven Biwo from BIWO

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Sven! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Sven Biwo: I have to say thank you. It’s a pleasure.

CV: Do you feel Heavy Metal music in general is viewed differently by fans in Europe compared to fans elsewhere, especially in America, and if so why?
SB: It’s hard to say because I haven’t seen any American fans so far. But I think that Americans are more open to new things than Europeans. But there are more diehard fans on this side of the Atlantic than in America, I would argue.

CV: What do you feel makes Heavy Metal music so alluring to the fans? What is it about the music that personally resonates so strongly with you?
SB: How often did you get goosebumps after an awesome guitar solo or after an awesome chorus or break? The difference is that in heavy metal they still work properly. Unfortunately, metal is not as wild as it was in the 80's and 90's, but I hope it will come back.

CV:
Has Metal splintered into too many sub-genres in your opinion, thus, making it harder for newer bands to actually classify themselves as one style over another?  Is it confusing for fans as well?
SB: In the meantime, yes. The problem is not the subgenres but all the subgenres of the subgenres. You lose the overview at some point. With Heavy Metal I connect together with Power, Speed and Trash Metal for example. I don't really subdivide that anymore.

CV: How would you describe the current state of the music business considering we are now living in a COVID aware, and maybe even feared world? Have things drastically changed long-term for artists and bands given the recent pandemic? What are your thoughts?
SB: Not only has COVID changed everything but also inflation. Everything is getting more expensive, but unfortunately, we don't earn any more money. The small clubs have closed and the masses follow the big events, so that even now after the COVID pandemic, the underground is left without anything.

CV: What do you feel makes your band and its particular approach to songwriting work? What keeps the band together and making music?
SB: The good thing is that we are all active somewhere in metal and don't come from foreign genres. Hanno also likes to listen to metalcore and stuff like that. Finley listens to classic metal and also new metal.  That will play an important role for future albums. Because I want to keep the spirit of true metal but refine it with the BIWO formula.

CV: On a more global view, how do you see your band’s music and songwriting separating itself from just being another Heavy Metal act?
SB
: I think we sound very unique. Of course you can hear influences from other bands but that's part of it. It's all just evolving. But if anyone can tell me who we sound like, feel free to contact me.

CV: Can an artist truly be unique? Some would argue there is no such thing as being unique; that it’s nothing more than a compounding of influences making an artist who or what they are. Would this then say that artists today are destined to be just copies of those who have already come to pass?
SB: Deep Purple and Black Sabbath also had their influences and expanded the whole thing with their own ideas and thus created something new. Today, in principle, nothing else happens, only the differences are not as big as back then, because the inventions in the music business are missing. It's about achieving maximum profit instead of artistic development.

CV: Are there life lessons to learn being in a Heavy Metal band that you feel cannot be taught elsewhere? If so, what are they?
SB: I have never seen big fights at a metal concert or festival. Metal is a brotherhood for life and this is the lesson you learn.

CV: What do you feel makes someone a “rock star”? Does being a rock star automatically make one iconic or are the two completely different in your opinion?
SB: To be honest, I don't give a damn. We are all rock stars in our own lives. In Germany there is a saying: we all only boil with water.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming as the world looks to surmount a new normal laced with a load of restrictions?
SB: First up, the first single "Live Now" will be released on all digital platforms on Sept. 16, 2022. Then the promotion campaign continues. On 11.11.2022 the album will be released. I hope that we can play our first club shows in 2023. I am really looking forward to this chapter.

CV: Thank you again Sven for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
SB: Thank you that I can present myself here.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
