Interview with Vocalist Lauren Eliza of DramaScream

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Lauren! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

Lauren Eliza: Of course!! Thank you so much for having me.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What specific allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
LE: We are on the cusp of Hard Rock and Metal…as a band we don't have one set style, we blend so many genres on our albums to create an experience. Vocally my screams have gained attention typically to those who have never seen us perform. Several fans have told us that they had to move up to see if the scream was actually coming from me.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
LE: Feeling out your audience and trying to gauge the energy in the room. When you're the out of town band there's a feeling that you have to prove yourself and I know that when we are done we've left it all out there. Every time you play it's like this outpour of emotions. The audience feeds off of the band's energy so making sure you stay authentic and give them your all they will remember you.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
LE: We create our setlist based on the mood that evening. We generally start with a banger to get the audience going. We tailor our set list to the crowd so if it means they need more energy we skip the heartfelt and hit them with the heavier stuff. It's important to read the crowd and see how they respond; sometimes they want to hear your stories and a wider variety of sounds. Sometimes they just want to headbang and let it all go. Also we use our own lights that are programmed to go with our set, to create a vibe for each song. It makes a huge difference when you have the whole package on the stage. No matter what we bring the energy.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
LE: Yes and no. It's both easier and more difficult to make it as a band because there is so much music out in the world everyone is dying to get their piece of the pie so to speak. On the other hand if it weren't for social media and other music apps we would never reach people on the side of the world without being able to tour. There's give and take to everything, consistency and perseverance are what it takes to succeed...and a little bit of luck.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
LE: I think there is a middle ground to a certain extent. Trying to make music your main income is doable, but it requires hustle and then more hustle. We've been working at this for almost 5 years and everything we've made has gone right back into the machine. Also middle ground to some might be "making it" to others so it's subjective. I think having clear goals can help keep you on a path towards success. Some people are cutthroat and you have to watch out but, I think it comes with the industry.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
LE: Our internal energy is dynamic, real and lively. I would say for the most part when you see us perform and meet us in person, what you see is what you get. I'm typically quiet and reserved before I go up because I am in the zone and I'm shy around people I don't know when I'm not on the stage. Once I get off the stage it's like I come to life and the real me is ready to meet people.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
LE: The guys typically start with a riff or drum beat and create a scratch track. Sometimes we will hear a song or watch a movie and get inspiration from it too. Once we have the track I listen to it and write down the feeling that it gives me and get a general melody recorded. We also go back and listen to previous songs that we've written to make sure that we're not recycling the same material.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
LE: For the band the structure is guitar, bass, drums scratch track, they go into the studio and then start to branch out once they get the foundation down. I typically go in with a few words written down that I think the song represents or the feeling I am getting from it, and go from there. I then give it a day, listen to everything and go back in . From there we start to add nuances, leads and harmonies. We listen to the song on our laptops, phones, you name it, and once it passes the car speaker test we give it a stamp of approval.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
LE: I believe most fans and critics have described us accurately. Then again if someone feels differently than I do about a song, but they are still getting what they need to feel from it I can't really say they are wrong. I truly believe that art is not just one thing, which is what makes it so rad.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
LE: Fans will see a lot of movement, we like to run around…minus Justin our drummer, and I’ve been told by photographers that it was a challenge to take pictures of me. We are in your face quite literally and if the venue permits it, we will come out and headbang with you.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
LE: We have 3 new singles lined up over the next few months, each of them different from the other; we are evolving as a band. We are going to be working on videos for each single; one may require flame throwers so ...we are all excited about that one. We have shows booked but are not able to announce at this time so keep an eye and ear out for us!!

CV: Thank you again Lauren for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
LE: Thank You!!!!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
