COSMICK VIEW: Hello,
Svenja! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Svenja: Hi!

CV: Do you feel Heavy Metal music in general is viewed differently by fans in Europe compared to fans elsewhere, especially in America, and if so why?
Svenja: I don´t think so. I´m pretty sure that the passion for Heavy Metal is the same, no matter where you´re from.

CV: What do you feel makes Heavy Metal music so alluring to the fans? What is it about the music that personally resonates so strongly with you?
Svenja: Heavy Metal, or Metal in general, is an enormously powerful type of music. It can be wild as fuck but also melancholic or calming. It´s handmade and real…there´s no playback or other stuff like that.

CV: Has Metal splintered into too many sub-genres in your opinion, thus, making it harder for newer bands to actually classify themselves as one style over another?  Is it confusing for fans as well?
Svenja: Yes, in my opinion there are too many sub-genres, so I personally don´t care about sub-genres to be honest. If I listen to a band I´m not wondering in what sub-genre it could fit. Anyway, often you can´t classify a band to only one sub-genre.

CV: How would you describe the current state of the music business considering we are now living in a COVID aware, and maybe even feared world? Have things drastically changed long-term for artists and bands given the recent pandemic? What are your thoughts?
Svenja: Yeah, things have changed. Gigs got cancelled and gigs are more important than anything else to make some new fans. You have more time for things like photo shoots, rehearsal, etc. though.

CV: What do you feel makes your band and its particular approach to songwriting work? What keeps the band together and making music?

Svenja: It´s all about having fun and patience. The best ideas come without pressure, so we stay calm and don´t hurry. If we don´t find a good riff or melody today, we´re gonna find it tomorrow and this works really well. Anyway, we´re not just a community of convenience, we really like each other. This also increases productivity in my opinion.

CV: On a more global view, how do you see your band’s music and songwriting separating itself from just being another Heavy Metal act?  Svenja: We often stick to one good riff in a song and try to keep it as simple as possible. It may sound boring nowadays, but that´s what makes our songs catchy. It´s also the combination of male and female vocals that makes our music special.

CV: Can an artist truly be unique? Some would argue there is no such thing as being unique; that it’s nothing more than a compounding of influences making an artist who or what they are. Would this then say that artists today are destined to be just copies of those who have already come to pass?
Svenja: It would not, because each band member has his or her own compounding of influences. And when four or five people come together and decide to start a band and each of them brings his influence, you can create a very unique style, especially if one of them is also into other music genres or sub-genres, besides Heavy Metal.

CV: Are there life lessons to learn being in a Heavy Metal band that you feel cannot be taught elsewhere? If so, what are they?
Svenja: I personally learned that you don´t have to be afraid to go on stage and that you don´t have to be perfect. If you don´t hit a note correctly, for example, most of the people do not even notice. Of course you should still give your best and try not to mess it up :)

CV: What do you feel makes someone a “rock star”? Does being a rock star automatically make one iconic or are the two completely different in your opinion?
Svenja: In my opinion a rockstar is able to rule the audience, a rockstar is not just a good musician. And there are only a few icons, so being a rockstar does not mean being an icon.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming as the world looks to surmount a new normal laced with a load of restrictions?
Svenja: Our new album “Heading For The Crown” will be released on April 22 and we wanna play some gigs in Germany if it´s possible due to the pandemic.

CV: Thank you again Svenja for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Svenja: Thank you too, it was a lot of fun :)

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
