Interview with Dan Loureiro of Carnified (Brazil)

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Dan! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Dan Loureiro: We thank you very much for the support provided to Carnified's work.

CV: Given so many major changes over the last decade, do you believe the music industry is a practicable and stable enough environment for new artists to even consider making it a valid career choice? Can a level of sustainable success really be achieved in your opinion?
DL: In my opinion things are changing a lot in the music industry, and there are a lot of things to face yet. Those changes make the music career more instable and force musicians to travel more to have some profit. I think that in North America and Europe we still can make that choice. Here in Brazil I don’t believe that it will happen if you are thinking on a sustainable success.

CV: What do you see as the biggest change in the music industry since you first started out?
DL: When we started to make music, people were hungry to acquire an album, we would listen the entire album to understand the band, read the lyrics, look who produced the album. It was difficult to access new albums and musical equipment and these difficulties made the things more important to us. Today everything is in your hand, fast, easy and, it seems, without meaning. The way to hear and consume music changed because of it and it has an impact in a band releases.

CV: How do you see your music separating itself from your peers and avoiding just being another cog in the wheel?
DL: For us it’s all about taking all the feelings and put it out there. We need to love it in the end. When you express yourself with truth and work hard to do your best, it doesn’t matter if you are with a band or alone. Great things will happen, and that behavior makes you more than another cog in the wheel.

CV: Has the industry’s many changes affected how you write music? Has it influenced your songwriting style in any drastic form?
DL: Didn’t affect the way we write music, but affected the way we release new songs. Regarding write music, we remain the same.

CV: Has digital technology led the way for almost anyone to be a musical artist in your opinion?
DL: Digital technology broke barriers; put distant things together, democratized art and access to knowledge. We know that there are a lot of good artists who only can do something because of technology. But technology alone is not enough to become a good artist, specially in heavy metal music.

CV: Has music in general been broken into too many sub-genres? Why do think there are so many classifications of music types? Can this be confusing for an artist who is looking to build a brand? As well, can it be confusing for the fans?
DL: I think sub-genres were things created by the industry to group new “products” and make the sales easy. Look at Carnified’s music; we have a lot of old school death metal, modern death metal, black metal, doom metal and heavy metal structures in our music. How can we label it? For us it is death metal…simple just like that! It confuses us to classify our own songs…for the fans it may seems like a mess too.

CV: How would you define “iconic” when it comes to being an artist or musician? What do you think makes an artist iconic?
DL: In my opinion when a lot of people and bands wants to sound like you, want to know how to do the things you do, want to play, compose and want to seem like you, you have become an icon…someone who is a reference.

CV: Who would you consider to be a modern day “rock star?” And is being a “rock star” something to aspire to?
DL: No! We are not rock stars. We are an old death metal band from Brazil. Yes, we want our place out of the shadows. We want to reach as many people and countries as we can. But I don’t think that we aspire to be a rock star. We aspire to be recognized and leave a legacy for the extreme music.

CV: Does music need to have a message to convey to the world for it to be worth listening to in your opinion?
DL: As I said, music needs to be done with truth and passion. And everything that comes from these two things has a meaning. If you hear something and it doesn’t make your blood flow fast, this is not music for you to listen to. But if the music touches you, there’s something there.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming?
DL: We are working a lot in the promotion of our new single “Nocturna.” At the end of June, we will release the first Carnified video. I can guarantee that the video is wonderful. We are producing new songs for our upcoming album and seeking labels around the world to release our songs too. Stay tuned…we have a lot of news coming.

CV: Thank you again Dan for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
DL: One more time, thank you very much for the invite and support. I would like to ask the readers to follow us on our social media channels. We hope to play in your country as soon as the pandemic ends. Cheers from Brazil!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
