Interview with Vocalist and Bassist Coldun

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to TheCosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Coldun: Big thanks for the opportunity to speak to you and your audience!

CV: Do you feel Heavy Metal music in general is viewed differently by fans in Europe compared to fans elsewhere, especially in America, and if so why?
Coldun: I can’t say much about it to be honest. All I know of the metal scene in USA is from DVD or video. And I think it looks like the same maniac freak show as here.

CV: What do you feel makes Heavy Metal music so alluring to the fans? What is it about the music that personally resonates so strongly with you?
Coldun: I think it is the mixture of emotions that are transported by this kind of music…the aggression and harshness at one hand and two seconds later or one song later on the same album some deep feelings and spiritual thoughts for example. That is fascinating for me and maybe also for a lot of other people.

CV: Has Metal splintered into too many sub-genres in your opinion, thus, making it harder for newer bands to actually classify themselves as one style over another?  Is it confusing for fans as well?
Coldun: Yes. I can say this from my own experience. I still today don’t know exactly in which sub-genre COLDUN has to be pushed. We discussed that point really a lot but haven’t come to a clear position. Hopefully that doesn’t lead to the point where some potential COLDUN-fan doesn’t give the new album a chance to listen to because of a genre-label that doesn’t fit.

CV: How would you describe the current state of the music business considering we are now living in a COVID aware, and maybe even feared world? Have things drastically changed long-term for artists and bands given the recent pandemic? What are your thoughts?
Coldun: Some long-term changes concerning the music business are going on for sure.

I wouldn't change anything on the business, because my opinion is that every society…in our case now a consumer society, deserves the "music business" that is there. But a lot of things bother me about it…it's no secret. That is why I have been moving on the edge of this business for a few years now and also on the edge of the horizon, beyond which it no longer makes any sense to publish music like COLDUN's classically. I have therefore withdrawn from all previous activities on the stages and rehearsal rooms, among other things because the music landscape and this so-called "business" has changed a lot in the last 15 years. On the other hand, I have settled down quite well on this edge of this horizon and life is still interesting there as a musician.

With the short-term changes because of the COVID thing, it is something I don’t try to think so much about it. Maybe I wait till it’s a long-term issue.

CV: What do you feel makes your band and its particular approach to songwriting work? What keeps the band together and making music?
Coldun: With the new album “Grand Sun Ritual” the way of writing music changed a lot. On the previous albums, I wrote the complete music on my own. Now a big part of the new album is written as a band and you can hear this clearly, especially in the guitar and drum parts. I really like the result. It sounds much heavier and tighter but yet emotional and with a deep atmosphere and catchy melody lines. So now we have found the perfect balance between those worlds.

CV: On a more global view, how do you see your band’s music and songwriting separating itself from just being another Heavy Metal act?
Coldun: Oh…you just have to hear it with your own ears. I think we have our own sound and feeling in combining heavy and emotional metal music landscapes…but hear it for yourself and decide!

CV: Can an artist truly be unique? Some would argue there is no such thing as being unique; that it’s nothing more than a compounding of influences making an artist who or what they are. Would this then say that artists today are destined to be just copies of those who have already come to pass?
Coldun: To achieve a really uniqueness is very hard…nearly impossible. But to achieve a state where you don’t sound like thousands of others is possible. It was possible in former times and still is.

CV: Are there life lessons to learn being in a Heavy Metal band that you feel cannot be taught elsewhere? If so, what are they?
Coldun: You can be drunk like a skunk but still sing terribly wrong.

CV: What do you feel makes someone a “rock star”? Does being a rock star automatically make one iconic or are the two completely different in your opinion?
Coldun: I firmly believe that famous people like “rock stars” are no better or more interesting people than anyone else. It would be interesting for me to speak to celebrities who see it the same way, because then they could tell with a pinch of humor what coincidental circumstances lead to their publicity.

An iconic star in my opinion is someone who is a unique person and musician who doesn’t give a shit of the mass opinion and just make his kind of stuff. If he becomes famous then for some reason and doesn’t change…it could become a new Lemmy.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming as the world looks to surmount a new normal laced with a load of restrictions?
Coldun: Right now, we fully concentrate on the promotion and publishing of the new album “Grand Sun Ritual”. It is planned to come out at 15.01.2021! Let’s see what happens next.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Coldun: Thanks to you too…have a good time Mick!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
