AIMPOINT: Digging Deep by Pamela Aloia

By guest author Pamela Aloia

The saying goes “that which does not kill us makes us stronger.” This may be no further from the truth and no more relevant than in current times. A quick look around andone can easily see that the world, at the moment, is divided and struggling to find its way. Though this may be a temporary situation, the immediate and long term effects many will experience are all too real. There is a need to find some understanding and clarity.

In this month’s edition of AIMPOINT, guest author Pamela Aloia once again offers words of encouragement and perspective to assist us in navigating the current mind field of discourse and uncertainty.

Digging Deep

In some way, shape, or form, we have all been impacted by the effects of COVID and associated factors. Some feel our rights have been taken away; various social and business venues have been hindered, shut down for months or have closed for good; people have lost jobs, homes, possessions. Many people still working are doing so at a decreased pay rate due to organizational financial issues. The reality of the impact is showing up continuously and we are growing frustrated, incapacitated, and borderline unhopeful with varying discussions of change around the corner.

Usually it’s more an individual experience where we find we need to go within and muster up the courage and resilience to forge ahead. In this case, we’re looking to globally dig deep within our moral character to find the strength, to find the hope, and anchor the belief that going on is important and necessary.

I have been in contact with such a variety of mindsets on this national and global state we are currently participating in. One mindset is we have no hope and should prepare for revolution; another is that the situation will shift in America after November’s election; another is eagerness, yet a feeling of false hope ; and still others believe the masses will prove a plandemic that will bring us together in an unexpected way.

In continuing to bear with this situation and move through to the other side, it’s helpful to acknowledge what we have lost and come to terms on some level we are grieving globally. There has been no opportunity for closure, only continuing to find ways to deal with whatever is being thrown at us and what we are dealing with at the moment. However, we can look to recognize that everyone’s relationship with the external situation and our ability to cope with it are both unique.

Regardless what is believed, we’re still in the midst of where we are. Many of our social and personal activities that help provide perspective to situations have been removed from our grasp. We are needing to find other activities to help distract us or keep our spirits neutral or high as this situation lingers. Even sitting with the memory of an elating experience can bring the emotions, thoughts, and sensations into our being if we are unable to experience the activity itself. We’re in a position where we are needing to be creative with how we make space and time away from the ordinary so we can bring in levity and a higher perspective.

Being sure we take care of ourselves first and foremost is a priority. Finding the time and people to talk with about what we are individually going through, create the space we need, distract ourselves, take up a new hobby, widen our support teams, journal, dance, listen to or create music – whatever moves us to something lighter. Take care of ourselves and if we can, take care of others. Know that we can get through this with patience, trust and a whole lot of love.

With all that said, it takes courage, persistence, perspective, and hope to take our daily steps to the new normal whatever that may hold. Some days we’ll need to dig deeper than others to maintain a light heart and positive mindset. Keep in mind, we’re all in this together, try to focus on one change at a time, and keep in mind all that we’re gaining as we move forward – individually and collectively. We have the strength to unite with those near and dear to our hearts, as well as like-spirited people who can help support our positive movement to our next moment. Soon, we’ll see that digging deep to maintain our course will prove fruitful and we may not need to dig as deeply for a while.  Until then, hang tight, take care of you, and keep your thoughts upward!
