Interview with Tony Covino of In Theory

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Tony! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

Tony Covino: Thank you for having us!

CV: How would you define or describe a hero? What do you feel makes a hero different than everyone else?

TC: A hero is someone who lifts others in time of need or inspires you in some way. A hero is someone who is willing do the hard things that most are not willing to do, day in and day out to get better at what they do and be a role model.

CV: Has our society's perception of what a real hero is and does been greatly skewed because of media influence in your opinion?

TC: Yes, the media has it own spin on what is right and wrong and that leads people to think a certain way towards what a hero should be and who we should think is a hero.

CV: Is a hero judged on what they have done or how they have lived?

TC: It should be both…we all have our flaws but If you’re going to be a hero, it should be everything as one, and the bar needs to be set high.

CV: Are those we consider musical heroes, individuals who have set an example in some way or another that others want to follow? Can being a hero be a goal for an artist?

TC: In music it would be an individual who is at the top of their craft for many years and has influenced and inspired other musicians to strive to be like them. As a musician your goal shouldn’t be trying to be a hero. Just do your best and continue to work on your craft, be original and hopefully that will inspire your audience.

CV: In Theory has just released their new single "Heroes." Tell us a little about the song and its message?

TC: “Heroes” is actually an anti-hero song. It’s my macro view of the world. I feel people right now look up to athletes, actors, politicians and social media stars, all who hide their flaws. They bend the truth to what makes them look good with the help of social media, news media, etc. and then tell us how to live our lives or how we should think.

CV: Songwriting can be a very personal craft, especially when one writes about their own life experiences. Do you find that In Theory's writing is a retelling of those experiences or is it more like a collection of exploratory situations and thoughts?

TC: For me it is what I’m feeling inside about a wide variety of things going on around me. I am an introvert at heart, and I use singing and lyrics to get that emotion out.

CV: Does self-expression through the band's music offer you a unique way of communication in your opinion?

TC: I try not to have our music form an opinion for you. The song “Heroes” will mean different things to whoever listens to it and maybe they can question their own choices.

CV: Does having a diverse musical background offer In Theory a broader scope of songwriting techniques and the ability to reach a larger listening audience?

TC: It helps to have the chops to fall back on, but at the core of all successful songs they move people and get across the emotion the artist intended and most times than not, less is more.
CV: Where do you see the music industry going following the COVID-19 pandemic? Some fear it may only get worse. What are your thoughts?
TC: No one really knows…I am hoping for a fast and safe recovery for bands and artists to play out and tour live again in front of an audience. Guess we will have to wait and see.

CV: What's next for the band now following the single's release? What can fans expect to see coming from In Theory for the remainder of 2020 and beyond?

TC: We have a lot more songs we have been recording and some are completed for release. We hope to get those out soon, do more social media things for our audience to see and hear us, and we really hope to get out on tour and see everyone live again soon!

CV: Thank you Tony again for spending some time talking and sharing with
our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

TC: Thank you for the opportunity to be here!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
