Interview with Bad Boy Eddy Guitarist Dave Saker

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello Dave! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

CV: Bad Boy Eddy definitely has an 80ā€™s sound. What prompted the decision to embrace this particular classic style of music?
Dave Saker: 80ā€™s music is my roots, that is when I started playing and was greatly influenced by the ā€œHair Bandsā€ of the 80ā€™s, such as Skid Row, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Y&T.

CV: What was the San Francisco music climate like, specifically the rock scene, when you first decided to put together the band?
DS: The original BBE was formed in the early 90ā€™s; Eddy Vega ā€“ vocals, Myself ā€“ lead guitar,  Jonny Stad ā€“ guitar,  GT Lyons ā€“ bass, and Scotty Smallwood ā€“ drums. The music scene at the time was awesome, we had great venues like the Omni and the Stone, run by John and Toby Nady and the Mabuhay Gardens.

CV: How has the Bay area scene changed since the band's initial formation from your observation?
DS: Venues are getting harder and harder to find for the ā€œOriginal Musicā€ bands. That being said, there are so many very talented people and original bands in the Bay Area. We get quite a few Nationals coming through with a chance to open for many of them.

CV: Bad Boy Eddy is a compliment of veteran Bay Area rock ā€˜n rollers. Do you feel having such a unique pedigree of local talent offers the band a unique element that other bands might be missing?
DS: BBE is a talented group of musicians who have played together for quite a while and I think what makes us stand apart from the other bands is our style of music. I write old school 80ā€™s with big melodic choruses and plenty of room for guitar solos! We always strive to not only play our music, but put on a rockinā€™ show!

CV: Does this member selection make the songwriting process more involved because of the range of experience and versatility or are writing duties more of a singular approach?
DS: It does, however, when I write a song, I typically choose the vocalist that fits the song. Recently I have worked with Eddy Vega, Karl Granneman, Kevin Cray, Greg Murray, and Josh Gipson.  I have new music in the works right now!

CV: What's your method for balancing your work with Bad Boy Eddy and your solo work with Saker?
DS: It is not really a balance. I just create and decide from my heart where the song fits. BBE tends to be more hard rock, but I love to write the love ballads and softer stuff too.

CV: Does being in a band alongside having a solo career create any level of conflict or apprehension with how your material is divided up and used between the two?
DS: No, the solo work is recordings at this point, I do not currently have a ā€œbandā€ that plays the ā€œSakerā€ music.

CV: Musically, what do you see is the biggest difference between Saker and Bad Boy Eddy?
DS: Nothing, it is all Dave Saker music

CV: Personally, do you consider yourself a digital downloader or an old school album buyer?
DS: We have a killer stereo and play it frequently and loudly!

CV: Who are some of the artists who have deeply inspired you over the years? What is it about these artists that have had such an impact in you?
DS: Sebastian Bach, Dave Meniketti, Rob Halford. Love their style and passion for the music.

CV: What do you feel separates Bad Boy Eddy from other nostalgic sounding rock bands...that one thing that sets you apart?
DS: Our fans set us apart. We have fans that come from far away to see us play and it truly is humbling!

CV: It seems everything does come full circle at one time or another as more and more bands are embracing that classic 70ā€™s and 80's sound. What do you think is the reason is for the recent spike in interest?
DS: Recent? We have been playing for last seven years at least. I think the fans of 80ā€™s rock are very loyal and it reminds them of their roots.

CV: What's next for you and Bad Boy Eddy in 2019?
DS: A couple new songs currently in the works, and I would like to focus more on music videos.

CV: Thank you again Dave for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
DS: Thank you for your time and interest in Bad Boy Eddy and Dave Saker!
