Interview with the Band Ventures

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it’s greatly appreciated.

CV: Every artist experiences highs and lows. Many struggle just to move from one level to the next, and some, unfortunately, never do. What would you consider to be a pivotal point in an artist’s career which would take them from one level to the next that a struggling artist should be aware of? Is it an individual mindset or does it equate more to opportunity?  Or is it something altogether different in your opinion?
Ventures: Oh, that's a tough one right off the bat! Personally, I believe it's all about the team you have. Anyone can succeed in the music industry with the right people who prioritize the band above everything else. Finding such dedication is challenging these days. If even one person isn't giving 100%, you'll never be able to reach the next level.

CV: What do you feel an artist can do right now to stay relevant, especially in an environment, such as the present, where performing in front of a live audience is not an option?
Ventures: There are hundreds of ways for artists to stay relevant today, but are any of them truly worthwhile? That's the real question. Many people might point to platforms like TikTok, but if labels are holding artists' songs hostage until they achieve a certain number of views or go viral, it's not really beneficial. It's better to focus on your music and your band. Sure, it's harder and takes longer, but I'd rather build a real fanbase than rely solely on a TikTok following. Maybe that's why we don't have many fans yet, hahaha.

CV: What have you found to be the balancing point between relevance and over-saturation when it comes to being an artist? Is there a fine line between the two or can it be looked at to some degree as the two essentially being one and the same?
Ventures: Isn't this all a matter of perspective? As a listener, you might think, "They post too much, why don't they take a break?" But even a 1% chance of reaching a new listener or two can always help.

Richard: They're playing too many tours. There's a band that's buying onto every tour they can. Sure, it's fun and games, but we're starting to get bored, and they weren't very enthusiastic to begin with, hahaha.

CV: Is there any level of consideration, or even concern, to deliver on
expectations, whether it being your own or that of the fans, when working
on new material?
Ventures: Oh, never, hahaha. We're a hive mind that isn't too concerned about how our music is perceived. All we care about is having fun and enjoying what we do. We've never felt pressured to release something just to meet expectations or a release quota.

Richard: Explains why no one enjoys our songs, hahaha.

CV: For you, what’s first when it comes to songwriting…is it a matter of lyrics melody, chords, beat, attitude? Or is it more organic than that where the moment dictates the process and outcome?
Ventures: We never write anything we wouldn't listen to ourselves. If you don't enjoy listening to a song, you'll never enjoy playing it live. Many of our songs can shift from a nice melody to a heavy, mean chorus. But generally, we always bring the attitude, hahaha.

CV: What do you believe makes songwriting more honest and impactful...that something that both the artist and listener can share?
Ventures: Real life! It doesn't have to be something that actually happened to you; a made-up story grounded in reality can resonate with many people. Think about it—if someone wrote a song about eating or breathing, everyone could relate. Some of our favorite bands have deep, meaningful songs that hit differently if you've been in those headspaces, etc.

CV: What do you feel has been the greatest contribution to your success as an artist?
Ventures: Success? Isn’t any, hahaha.

Richard: Jokes aside, we rely on each other for support. Without the guys, I wouldn't have been able to continue and probably would have given up a long time ago. I owe them a lot.

CV: What’s next for you? What can fans expect to see coming up?
Ventures: We've just released our brand new single "Melt With Me" on all streaming platforms. Plus, we have another song, "Portrait," coming out at the beginning of August. We'll be playing a handful of shows leading up to the release, so if you're local, come down and say hi.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
