Interview with Guitarist Jere of Heathen Hearts

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten
Pounder
! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does
that definition uniquely describe the music?

Jere: Heathen Hearts is a Finnish metal / hardcore act. I’d say our music is very much rooted in hardcore, but we are very much influenced by all kind of sub genres of metal. As long as it feels genuine and authentic, that’s our way of writing music. Not over produced, and the passion and aggression sums it up.

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a
level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you

made the connection to your fans?

Jere: We were only formed a bit over a year ago, so we are still building our connection and communication, our band and the fanbase. But so far with the music videos, first EP and shows we’ve played, there is something special.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Jere: Yes it is for sure if you think about the live shows and the mood on the stage. But writing-wise no, it’s just us creating something that feels right for ourselves.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Jere: In my opinion yes. Social media is a big factor nowadays, that I think the content you share there, is a line drawn between your personal life and your appearance in public. Everybody's free to speak and interact with whomever, but if you feel like you're giving up your personal space, then back off from the situation that makes you feel uncomfortable.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Jere: No.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Jere: No idea.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Jere: Of course it has made people easier tools to improve their way of doing music, for example I use plugin amplifiers at home which sounds amazing. But when you need technology to improve yourself and your performance, that’s just wrong.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
Jere: The ones that are setting the trends, huge respect, regardless of the genre, because there is some kind of sense and artistic hunch about things. If you only follow them, well, not so respected. Everything has to be genuine and authentic, even though in a modern music world it’s usually not.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
Jere: In my opinion no, because to me good music is good music despite the genre or anything else. If the band feels like expanding the musical borders, and it feels right, go for it. And if you think if people might like it or not, fuck it. It’s your art and you determine how you want it to sound.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
Jere: Currently recording new EP, music video shooting in January and hopefully the EP out in march next year with a international promotion behind it. We are booking shows at the moment in Finland for next year to support the release, and hopefully get to expand the borders soon also.

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.
Jere: Thank you very much for having me, this was a pleasure!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
