Interview with Vocalist Nate Garrison of Preacher

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What specific allure does your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Nate Garrison: We will leave this one up to the fans. We think that the comment below really answers this the best possible way.

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
NG: For us, the fact that we aren't afraid to dive into other genres and subgenres to gain inspiration allows us to keep creating things that are new and exciting within the space.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
NG: The best way to bring this to our fans is by creating an immersive, once in a lifetime experience (tailored to the specific day) of playing our songs as closely to the records as possible while bringing every single ounce of energy we have to the performance and leaving it behind on the stage.

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
NG: We have always pressed forward with the mentality that nobody owes you anything. Everything we have accomplished thus far has been through our hard work and determination and this has caught the eye of the Management team we have today.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
NG: A middle ground could best be described as a band floating itself completely on its own financially as well as seeing consistent growth while at that stage. We would consider ourselves to be currently in and working our way up and out of that stage right now.

CV: How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your perspective?
NG: The band's energy is extremely cohesive and creative. I would say our outward appearance may catch people off guard versus when they see our live performance. This is purely due to the fact that we are four VERY different people with four very distinct personalities. Logically, it shouldn't work whatsoever, but that's the whole magic of this because it does.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
NG: We write all of our music on our own with zero outside influence or help. Anything goes. I don't think we have ever followed any specific process but typically we will demo out material on our own and bring a fully finished or almost finished song to the band to be finalized together. Once the songs are brought to the table is when the final ideas really start to flow and things kind of just glue together at that point.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
NG: Typically a rough version of the song will be sent to the group, and so long as nobody has negative feedback, the creative process will continue on. The song will later be sent to the group as a more polished and finalized version for everyone to contribute and add their spice to.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
NG: 100% would agree with our crowd interactions wherever we go. We are from Reno but everywhere we go feels just like home.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
NG: Prepare for not only a rock show, but a comedy show as well. As four of the most down to earth individuals you could ever meet, we are welcoming to anyone who wants to be a part of our group and we treat everyone like part of the Preacher family.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
NG: More energy, bigger shows, funnier jokes, longer hair, and refreshing new music always.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
