Interview with the Band Poison Oak (2022)

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Poison Oak: It’s pretty much Indie Rock…I don’t think  it can uniquely be described, haha. We just play the music we like and don’t really set out with any other ulterior motive.

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Poison Oak: Look to be honest I really do not care about this at all. We definitely don’t go out of our way to make a connection. That is just ridiculous. We love writing and playing music, and if someone appreciates that, and talks to us, then we’ll talk them…just like a normal human. I think trying to forceable make a “connection”, defeats the purpose of playing music in the first place. If people connect to our music, then that’s awesome. However, we will NEVER try to manipulate a connection to garner fans.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Poison Oak: Hmmm, I’m not really sure how to answer this question. As there are people who listened to our music, and if we interact, we just interact like normal human beings.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Poison Oak: If treat them as normal people then I would say yes.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Poison Oak: Definitely…not just the world, but even cities in countries would view music and digest it differently. Some places music and culture makes cities thrive, and other places it’s so dead, and terribly sad.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Poison Oak: Maybe, I don’t really know. I think it depends on their status as a musician. If they have more acclaim, then more people will go to their show. However, I know where I’m from, a lot of people support indigenous music. We don’t live in America…so we wouldn’t know the answer to this question really.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Poison Oak: Yeah, I think so. I think it has benefited musicians, as it has made some music more accessible. I think the negative is with this “Influencer culture”, where they are claiming to be artists, when all they’re doing is videoing themselves walking in circles or sitting on a toilet....

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?
Poison Oak: One who sets them never cared about trends in the first place.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
Poison Oak: Hmmm don’t really know. Maybe the more subgenres are created, the more people are getting music out there, and it’s developing…tough question really.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
Poison Oak: Our next single, out 15th of April, “Hope You Like the View!”

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
