Interview with Metalite Guitarist Edwin Premberg

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Edwin! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

CV: Metalite's new album "Biomechanicals" demonstrates that Metal has the ability to continue to evolve as genre and an artistic songwriting medium.  With the album's expansive sound and production, is there any concern about working on a follow-up release that can match or even surpass what this album delivers?
Edwin Premberg: We have already started planning for our third album and it will be done in the same way with the bombastic sound that Biomechanicals delivered. Of course we will try to make it even better and evolve Metalite’s sound even further. We have a lot of ideas to make the third album even stronger and more melodic than ever.

CV: The album has been described as futuristic. Do you agree with this description and if so, why do you feel the album comes across as such?
EP: In some ways it’s a futuristic and theatrical atmosphere involved in the writing, but in some cases there are real modern subjects that are happening right here and right now. For some people, it sounds like the future, but for me, that future is already here.

CV: What does "Biomechancials" mean? Does the album tell a story or send a message to the listener?
EP: A biomechanical can be described like a human robot…a human brain that controls the mechanics under the skin. That future is here now with all the tech gadgets that we use daily. Smartphones, smart watches, AIs, Social Media etc, etc. The message is, like we say in Sweden, keep it “Lagom”…not too much and not to little… “Lagom” is like keep the balance somewhere in the middle.

CV: The new album also features the band's new singer Erica Ohlsson. Was Erica's vocal addition to the band’s lineup instrumental in how "Biomechanicals" was written, arranged and produced?
EP: I wrote all the songs just for Erica. We tested some singers with some old stuff from the first album and one song that I wrote for Biomechanicals. When we decided that Erica should be the new singer I wrote all the songs for her. It’s all about having a great mix between the elements we use to make a great Metalite song. The vocals are really important to bring this style of music to the top.

CV: What does working with producer Jacob Hanson bring to the table? Was he involved with the songwriting for the album?
EP: Jacob is the real mastermind! He created the sound of Metalite by mixing the first song “Afterlife.” After the album “Heroes In Time” he evolved the sound even further. No, he was not involved in the songwriting and stuff like that…he has just mixed and mastered the album which we are really proud of.

CV: Take us through the process of finding a new singer for a Metal band? Is it a daunting process or did you already have several leads to go on when the search began?
EP: I knew what kind of voice I needed for the Metalite sound so I started to check out the places where those kind of singers perform. We tested about 5-8 singers…when I saw and heard Erica I knew she was the perfect match for Metalite. She performed with her group on a Rock show here in Stockholm. I contacted her and she wanted to try the songs in the studio.

CV: Dynamics within a band always change when a new member joins the fold. What do you feel has been the most positive change that has taken place within the Metalite ranks since Erica joined the band?
EP: I can only say that the dynamics in the band got better! She has a real positive personality and everything is possible with her onboard. The recording process has been a joy and you can surely hear it on the outcome.

CV: Does social media play a big part in the band's daily routine? Is social media an important part of Metalite's fan reach and interaction?
EP: Of course, we keep the contact with fans etc., through social media every day. Social media is very important nowadays and you have to have your daily routines. We spread our music through social media and without it, we would never exist I think.

CV: Has social media, in your opinion, done more harm than originally intended...actually equating to less overall human interaction, thus, creating a level of self imposed separation and isolation instead of bringing people closer together?
EP: There are always two sides of the coin, but I think the positive sides are more than the negative ones. You just have to keep the balance between the real life and the virtual world. It’s really easy to just stay at home and lose your real life…and you can do that really fast. Just staying in your own filtered bubble will do more harm then you think.

CV: What's next for Metalite? What can fans expect to see coming up?
EP: We are planning to get out and play more in Europe. We hope that we can present a tour in Europe soon. Just follow us on our FB page and you get the latest news.

CV: Thank you again Edwin for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
EP: Thank you very much! It has been a pleasure answering your questions.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
