Interview with Night Catcher

by Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Nightcatcher: No problemo!

CV: Every artist experiences highs and lows. Many struggle just to move from one level to the next, and some, unfortunately, never do. What would you consider to be a pivotal point in an artist's career which would take them from one level to the next that a struggling artist should be aware of? Is it an individual mindset or does it equate more to opportunity? Or is it something all together different in your opinion?
Nightcatcher: It’s definitely about the mindset. It’s a lot of work—or actually, it shouldn’t feel like work. If it feels like work, then it’s not the right mindset.

Some struggle their whole career, but still love it, because the music is what really matters—and we don’t do it for the money.

We do it to have fun, to write songs we love, and to hang out with our friends—but always with the dream in mind that one day we’ll be the band people talk about.

Of course, you have to do something yourself to reach the next level—play live, promote yourself… but after that? It’s luck (and good songs)

CV: What do you feel an artist can do right now to stay relevant, especially in an environment, such as the present, where performing in front of a live audience is not an option?
Nightcatcher: Be active on social platforms—not really something I’m good at. Personally, I’m releasing singles every other month from my upcoming album Nightcatcher Volume 1. I’m just trying to stay active and visible, especially as a new act.

CV: What have you found to be the balancing point between relevance and over saturation when it comes to being an artist? Is there a fine line between the two or can it be looked at to some degree as the two essentially being one in the same?
Nightcatcher: Hmm, if I follow a band and they post something new every day—or even multiple times a day—here I’m talking about Facebook—I have a tendency to hit the unfollow button. Maybe I’m too old, but I don’t need to see new stuff every single day in my feed. So, for grumpy me, the balance is: post something once a week… or I’ll delete YOU.

CV: Is there any level of consideration, or even concern, to deliver on expectations, whether it being your own or that of the fans, when working on new material?
Nightcatcher: If you have a fanbase—I mean a fanbase that actually buys your albums, merchandise, sells out tours, and so on—I’d probably think about it. But as things are now, or have always been, I don’t care what others say or think. Don’t get me wrong, it’s awesome when people say, ‘That’s a great song!’ But I wouldn’t change anything in the song just because someone thought it could be better. Only input from inside the band matters… and Nightcatcher is a one-man project, so easy.

CV: For you, what’s first when it comes to songwriting…is it a matter of lyrics melody, chords, beat, attitude? Or is it more organic than that where the moment dictates the process and outcome?
Nightcatcher: Sometimes I have no clue what I’m doing—I just pick up the guitar and turn on the computer… and it evolves from nothing into a finished song. I love that—you surprise yourself with something you wouldn’t expect.

Other times I almost have a clear vision of what I want—or at least what I’m going for. I’ve got that lyric or melody in my head, and it’s just about getting it down on paper… or tracked on the computer.

CV: What do you believe makes songwriting
more honest and impactful...that something that both the artist and listener can share?
Nightcatcher: If you can connect to the lyrics as a listener—mission completed. But I don’t think that’s the case here… my latest single is about the movie Hellraiser.

CV: What do you feel has been the greatest contribution to your success as an artist?
Nightcatcher: I’m not a success… yet!! But my stubbornness helps me get things done when I really want it.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming up?
Nightcatcher: My next single from the upcoming album Nightcatcher Volume 1 is on the way—release date to be announced. In the meantime, check out the other singles already out… you might even like them!

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with
our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
Nightcatcher: Thank you very much!

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, author, show host, big dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
