Interview with Kevin Grams, Vocalist & Guitar player of MAGEFA.
By Mick Michaels
COSMICK VIEW: Hello, Kevin! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to
chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Kevin Grams: Hello! Thanks for having me!
CV: Every artist experiences
highs and lows. Many struggle just to move from one level to the next, and
some, unfortunately, never do. What would you consider to be a pivotal point in
an artist's career which would take them from one level to the next that a
struggling artist should be aware of? Is it an individual mindset or does it
equate more to opportunity? Or is it something all together different in
your opinion?
KG: First you
have to think what you want to do with the music. Do you want to make it just
for fun or do you want to push it to the next level? So the mindset is very
important. In the beginning we did very few promotion what led to a bad result
for the songs being released. The step to pay for services is another step to
the next level. And from here it goes on and on.
I think hurdles are meant to be overcome.
CV: What do you feel an
artist can do right now to stay relevant, especially in an environment, such as
the present, where performing in front of a live audience is not an option?
KG: Especially
when you don't perform in a regular basis, or it's a pandemic, it's absolutely
crucial to endorse yourself and the music on social media every single day
while creating new content and music in the back.
CV: What have you found to be
the balancing point between relevance and over saturation when it comes to
being an artist? Is there a fine line between the two or can it be looked at to
some degree as the two essentially being one in the same?
KG: I think it
can be looked as the same. The more you are relevant, the more you over
saturate, vice versa. All in all it's important to be visible any day of the
week because that's what counts.
CV: Is there any level of
consideration, or even concern, to deliver on expectations, whether it being
your own or that of the fans, when working on new material?
KG: There is
always a level of consideration when it comes to a new song. But we are
ourselves strongest critic. We improve after any experience we make especially
after a series of concerts. We know that our some of our songs bring the
reactions in a live setting and we are orienting on that.
CV: For you, what’s first
when it comes to songwriting…is it a matter of lyrics melody, chords, beat,
attitude? Or is it more organic than that where the moment dictates the process
and outcome?
KG: I usually
focus the songwriting around a catchy riff and go from there to a style it fits
best. So for me it's more about the feeling of and the ability to stay in the
listeners head.
KG: I think the more of the writers emotions come into a song the more honest and impactful it is. So I put my very emotions in the foundation of any song we write. I think through that I can share my emotions felt while with the listener. Or maybe not. I may never know.
CV: What do you feel has been
the greatest contribution to your success as an artist?
KG: I think the
songs have the greatest contribution into our success but only as much as the
continued promotion that has spread our songs to listeners around the globe.
CV: What's next for you? What
can fans expect to see coming up?
KG: Our next
release is a single called “Bombs Over Europe” on October 20th. It is a song
about the actual war in the Ukraine and the potential to a nuclear downward
spiral. We are also in the songwriting phase for an LP coming out late 2025.
CV: Thank you again for
spending some time talking and sharing with
our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
