Interview with Drummer Tyler Clark of Nerv
By Mick Michaels
COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it is greatly appreciated.
Tyler Clark: Thank you for having us!
CV:
What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those
of similar sound and style? What's specific allure your sound and style
have that has people taking notice?
TC: All
of us come from heavier back grounds from past groups we’ve been with.
We use that heavy influence to create our instrumentals - while Dillon
adds his catchy R&B style vocals over the tracks to give it that
unique metalcore/pop/alternative R&B sound.
CV: For
any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do
you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and
being able to bring something more to the music?
TC: HOOKS
& PERSONALITY! Writing a catchy hook/chorus that captivates the
audience AND showing the audience the bands personality is absolutely
key to keeping those people coming back to stream your music, check out
your music videos & even come to more of your shows.
CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical
experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that
musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have
on its audience?
TC: By
writing songs that most people across the world can relate to, to let
the fans know that they are not alone with their struggles. Nerv is
always here as an escape, to let lose and jam out with us. Having a
captivating live show with entertaining lights, stage effects &
happy interactions with the audience creates a perfect setting for a
good time.
CV: The
music business has always been one that regardless of who you are,
where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.
Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself
to succeed?
TC: After
almost 8 years of being a band, we have witnessed that this does seem
to be the case. Keeping our heads high and pushing through the
challenges keeps us afloat in the “sink or swim” battle. Also, it helps
us to not view the industry as a “competition”, and just to have fun
with everything that we do. We are all bands out here trying to have the
same career path, spreading the positivity goes a long way.
CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
TC: There
is a little bit of middle ground. I’d say one of this bigger challenges
in today's industry is gaps between releasing music. If you spend too
much time off of releasing music, it can turn into a “hiatus” which
sometimes makes it hard to keep momentum flowing.
CV:
How would you describe the band's internal energy? Does the band’s
outward appearance align with its true inward nature from your
perspective?
TC: It
definitely does. We express ourselves as just a group of 4 best friends
that all have the same dream. Any behind the scenes videos you see of
us acting silly, or hugging each other, or even just talking laying
video games together - the energy is always genuine and we have a blast
doing this together as “brothers”.
CV:
What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there
certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and
evolves?
TC: A
lot of the instrumentals are creating with Jordan and Scott sitting in a
room together while exchanging riffs and ideas. Bringing Tyler into the
mix to see what drum styles will fit the vibe we are all feeling.
Dillon then spends a while coming up with different ideas/melodies and
will record different version until he & and the rest of the band is
satisfied. Sometimes we will spend YEARS on a song, unintentionally.
CV:
Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song
goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a
song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall
potential?
TC: Absolutely.
Sometimes we will start with an idea or vision, and end up with the
complete opposite. However, due to us allowing things to just happen,
the changes usually benefit the writing process.
CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
TC: We
would like to think so. “Genre-bending” is a term the fans &
critics use, and we love that term and try to stay true to it.
CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
TC: High energy, crowd interactions, with a slamming setlist that highlights our most popular hits!
CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
TC: A new EP will be releasing single by single over the next few months, revealing a... heavier... side of Nerv.
CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
TC: Thank you so much for your time & for your interest in Nerv! We appreciate you along side all readers. Until next time!
