Interview with Johnny from Blast Bomb

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music? Johnny – well we play 'Explosive Rock' why? Because we mix Punk Rock, Hard Rock and Scandi Rock to make a combination that can only be described as Explosive Rock!

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?

Johnny – I think it’s really important! No matter what level, social media makes it all easier and actually worse to stay connected with our fans. It’s easier to get the message across HOWEVER on the other side of the coin with all the noise its hard to sometimes get the message to new listeners, especially people who may really dig your sound.

Been an Englishman in a German band I use social media a lot to keep connected with fans back on the island. Bandcamp is also a great tool for reaching out to listeners.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?

Johnny – Its deep in our culture, we know what our fans want so we try to step out and deliver! Our fans want to drink a cold beer, listen to some catchy choruses and killer riffs... so when we write, that’s on our mind!

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?

Johnny – at our level for sure! We are not the Rolling Stones; people only know about us what we share.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion? If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?

Johnny – Music brings people together, regardless.

This is why I love it so much! I know that sounds a little 'Miss America' but I truly feel this and I have experienced it!

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?

Johnny – Not so much, I think press and radio has a bigger say on what we listen to, bands with better backing or higher financial power for PR campaigns stand much more chance building appeal thank where we are from or which country sound we have. It’s interesting because this year I discovered a band from the UK who are not normally in my style called Sleep Token, I am sure that most of your readers are now laughing at how late to the party I am, anyway they sold out a whole world tour, Vinyl Pre orders and merch without doing a SINGLE interview! That’s something I have never heard about, just a good concept and good music.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?

Johnny – Yes and No. what its done is made it more accessible to people.

Not every artist is a live performer or locked in a practice room getting tight for a studio. Yes it means there’s some real dog trash online HOWEVER we have also some unbelievable music from self producers and what’s even more amazing is these artists are now charting! Imagine that?

Although, speaking about myself and Blast Bomb for a moment we are an old fashioned band, we need to work stuff our in our practice room, bounce off each other and everything is written to be played live, if it should crappy live it’s not going on our record!

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?

Johnny – an artist who sets a trend are not scared to push boundaries, won’t take no for an answer and remain committed to their concept and their vision.

Followers change styles, images and sounds to jump on a wave.

Now this is where things get complicated, some bands who are trend setters change styles over the years, again this is not becoming a follower, it’s actually not sitting still, not settling for the same sound over and over its having the courage to keep on growing.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?

Johnny – 100% yes! There are two styles of music.

Music you like and music you don't. Our love and hates will not be the same as the person next to you and no one is wrong.

Don't be restricted to genres; you can miss out on something beautiful.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?

Johnny – so we are in the middle of promoting 'Explosive Sounds' 5 singles split of the coming months with a CD package to be delivered at the end. Part two called 21:47 came out on the 1st of November and it’s the perfect example of what we do!

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
