Interview with Mr. D from Standing Crew

By Mick Michaels

The Cosmick View: Hello, and welcome to The Cosmick View/MBM Ten Pounder! Thanks for taking some time to chat with us!
Mr. D: My pleasure.

CV: Describe your definition of the band’s sound and style and how does that definition uniquely describe the music?
Mr. D: It’s a ragtag collection of various influences filtered through the mental lens of being Finnish. The music itself may sound a bit American at first, but it’s not full blast “red, white & blue bombastic extravaganza”. There’s a touch of melancholy in there, lurking beneath the surface.

CV: Today, everyone talks about artist and audience connection. Is such a level of connection actually achievable for an artist and if so, how have you made the connection to your fans?
Mr. D: It should be possible, as long as the artist stays true to the art. The audience sometimes has a damn near supernatural instinct for sniffing out the fakers.

Have we made that connection? Don’t know, I’ve only been in the band since Easter.

CV: Is fan interaction an important part of the band’s inner culture?
Mr. D: If we wouldn’t interact with the outside world occasionally, we’d go nuts. Although given how the world is right now, we’d seem sane.

CV: Can a band truly interact with its fans and still maintain a level of personal privacy without crossing the line and giving up their “personal space” in your opinion?
Mr. D: Not since the rise of social media and smartphones. A band or artist needs to completely disappear once in a while to come up with new material to make the audience go “wow” and keep the critics employed.

CV: Is music, and its value, viewed differently around the world in your opinion?  If so, what do you see as the biggest difference in such multiple views among various cultures?
Mr. D: Depends on the music. Traditional folk music, for example, is the backbone of the identity of a country and its people. Portugal has fado, America has bluegrass, Australia has AC/DC…. Pop music, in general, has always been subject to marketing and the whims of its target audience.

CV: Do you feel that a band that has an international appeal, will tend to connect more so to American audiences? Would they be more enticed or intrigued to see the band over indigenous acts because of the foreign flavor?
Mr. D: If the band in question is a hard-working underdog on a mission with killer songs, they’ll make it. See also, The Scorpions.

CV: Has modern-day digital technology made everyone an artist on some level in your opinion? Have the actual lines of what really is an artist been blurred?
Mr. D: The tech sure made it easy for some people to call themselves artists, whether they earned the title or not…most likely not.

CV: How would you describe the difference between an artist who follows trends and one who sets them?

Mr. D: The trendsetter usually has a keen sense of cultural shifts, like David Bowie. The trend follower just wants to make buck or two off the rubes.

CV: Has music overall been splintered into too many sub-genres in an effort to appease fan tastes in your opinion? And has such fan appeasements, in actuality, weakened music’s impact as a whole by dividing audiences?
Mr. D: It’s splintered, sure, but I think it’s mainly happened in a desperate attempt to make something that stands out within a genre. Mathcore anyone? As far as weakening the impact, well “united we stand, divided we fall”.

CV: What can fans expect to see coming next from you?
Mr. D: New tunes, that’s the number one thing at the moment. We’ll see what comes next after that.

CV: Thanks again for taking some time and talking. It is greatly appreciated.
Mr. D: It’s always a blast.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
