Interview with the Melodic Dark Metal Band Angel Tyrs (Germany)

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

CV: Do you feel Heavy Metal music in general is viewed differently by fans in Europe compared to fans elsewhere, especially in America, and if so why?
AT: Unfortunately, we never played outside Germany until now.

Tom: I have seen Linkin Park at the Hollywood Bowl. It was
awesome; people were more into it than in Germany. We would love to play a show like that in the US.

CV: What do you feel makes Heavy Metal music so alluring to the fans? What is it about the music that personally resonates so strongly with you?
AT: Metal is so extremely diverse, it follows no rules. If you are happy or sad, angry or satisfied, for every situation you have a perfect song. It also does not matter who you are in real life. You are always welcome in the metal family.

CV:
Has Metal splintered into too many sub-genres in your opinion, thus, making it harder for newer bands to actually classify themselves as one style over another?  Is it confusing for fans as well?
AT: Well, now there are a lot of bands mixing genres, and you can't exactly define one specific genre. In our opinion, it doesn't confuse the fans because you can look for new bands more precise. But at the end of the day, it's all called "metal".

CV: How would you describe the current state of the music business considering we are now living in a COVID aware, and maybe even feared world? Have things drastically changed long-term for artists and bands given the recent pandemic? What are your thoughts?
AT: Many promoters have lost their livelihoods because of COVID. That's why it's not so easy to get the opportunity for gigs. And noticeably fans are still hesitant visiting concerts. This is also the reason why we organized our shows in 2022 completely by ourselves. From our point of view, there is no point in burying our heads in the sand. We want to play and the fans should have fun.

CV: What do you feel makes your band and its particular approach to songwriting work? What keeps the band together and making music?
AT: All band members are involved in songwriting. We are a team. Everyone contributes their own ideas to get the best result for each song. Also, we have been playing together for 20 years. So we know each other very well. It has become like a little family of our own.

CV: On a more global view, how do you see your band’s music and songwriting separating itself from just being another Heavy Metal act?
AT: We are not bound to a specific genre. Our music style is very different.

Mainly, we call our style Melodic Dark Metal, but we have different influences. Our setlist contains a “Ballade” as well as a “Black Metal” song, but all songs in our own style.

CV: Can an artist truly be unique? Some would argue there is no such thing as being unique; that it’s nothing more than a compounding of influences making an artist who or what they are. Would this then say that artists today are destined to be just copies of those who have already come to pass?
AT: Of course, you cannot reinvent the wheel. However, music also evolves.

Since the beginning of rock music, styles have changed constantly.
In our opinion, each band is unique, making its very own music. Be it is the singer, the guitarist or the drummer who brings in their own style of playing.

CV: Are there life lessons to learn being in a Heavy Metal band that you feel cannot be taught elsewhere? If so, what are they?
AT: W’re not sure if you learn things in a heavy metal band that you don't learn elsewhere. I think you have to be a team player in any band, no matter what style of music you play.

CV: What do you feel makes someone a “rock star”? Does being a rock star automatically make one iconic or are the two completely different in your opinion?
AT: For us, a rock star is simply a famous person who makes music. An idol, on the other hand, is a person for whom we have the greatest respect and who we also see as a role model.

CV: What's next for you? What can fans expect to see coming as the world looks to surmount a new normal laced with a load of restrictions?
AT: Currently, we are working on the new album which will be released 2023. In addition, we perfect our stage shows. So, be prepared….

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. It was a pleasure. I wish you all the best and continued success.
AT: Thank you very much for the opportunity for that interview.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
