Interview with Artist Irv Lyons Jr.

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello, Irv, and welcome to The Cosmick View! Thanks for taking some  time out of your day to speak with us. It’s greatly appreciated.
Irv Lyons Jr: Thank you for having me.

CV: What was that moment like when you realized music was your path? How did you know?
Irv: When I was a young man and recognized that my passion was with music, there wasn’t a single defining instant. It was more of an overall love of music that grew over time.

CV: As an artist, what does an exclusive musical identity look like to you, and what do you feel distinguishes yours from that of your peers?
Irv: I’m always thrilled when I’m compared to my peers in the industry,  that’s such a compliment. I do feel that I have a unique, distinguishable voice and a left-handed guitar style that gives me a signature sound that is something very recognizable and soulful.

CV: As a songwriter, do you feel songs need to have a message or even tell a story to truly connect with an audience? If so, what advantage does that provide for the artist?
Irv: As a songwriter, conveying my feelings and evoking emotion from the listener is the most important part. I usually have a message, but it isn’t always a serious one. Sometimes it’s simply about expressing how I’m feeling at the time. I hope my music connects with people and makes them respond — taking what I’m expressing and interpreting it through their own experiences and emotions.

CV: In addition to working on your current projects, tell us about your latest release. What inspired it? Is it a preview of what fans can expect from upcoming music?
Irv: Uncovered, my current group of songs, reflects the sound and stylings of yacht rock. This album is meant to have people dancing in the streets, so to speak. It’s about joy, happiness, and the simple pleasure of listening to music — going out for a night of fun and reliving your youth.

I also plan on releasing many more songs in the months and years ahead. My body of work spans a broad range of musical influences, and I express those genres through my own signature sound and style.

CV: Many critics believe music has fallen out of public favor — that its connection with audiences has weakened. Do you think that’s true, or is music simply competing for attention in an era of constant overstimulation?
Irv: No, music has not gone out of favor. Music is essential. It’s part of the human experience, and it will never fade away. Of course, technology changes the delivery and consumption of music and that’s the disrupting factor that will always be present.

CV: In your opinion, is fan loyalty being taken advantage of with the growing trend of artists and bands using backing tracks during live performances?
Irv: That’s a great question. A lot depends on the style of music and the practicality of delivering a high-level performance every night around the world. As musicians, we understand the demands of touring. I don’t find a problem with backing tracks if they’re created by the artists themselves and used appropriately,  just like any other instrument in a live performance.
That said, in my own music, I never use backing tracks. I want full control over the complete product, and for that product to come directly from my musical abilities and the abilities of the musicians I choose to perform alongside me. My fans can be guaranteed a 100% original Irv performance whether it’s live or recorded.

CV: As a musician and songwriter, is AI something the music industry should be fearful of, or should it be embraced as another creative tool?
Irv: When used properly, AI is another creative tool and can be a valuable one. But it should never replace the artist.

CV: What has music meant to you personally? How has it shaped your life, and what has it given you that nothing else could?
Irv: Music has meant everything in my life. It has guided my path and continues to shape my future. It has given me great joy and personal rewards, even if not always financial ones.

CV: What can fans expect to see from you in 2026 and beyond?
Irv: Fans can expect new music to be released consistently. They can also expect some surprises along the way as I experiment with new genres, while always delivering my signature sound. I love to play my guitar for hours every day, so expect to hear some new riffs that will blow your mind.

CV: Thanks again, Irv, for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, author, show host, big dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
