Interview with Legendary Runaways Singer Cherie Currie

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello, Cherie, and welcome to The Cosmick View! Thanks for taking some time out of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.
CC. My pleasure.

CV: Tell us a little about the new single, "When You're Young." How did you get involved and come to team up with Essex?
CC. It was lucky timing I guess!

Cleopatra had hired me to record the song solo which I did and next thing I knew, Brian, the president of Cleopatra sent me a mix with ESSEX as a duet. I was pleasantly surprised!

CV: How do you approach working in a duo situation...allowing your fellow artist to shine without taking a backseat and compromising your own style and vocal abilities? How do you balance the process, or does it all come out in the mix as they say?
CC. I’ve done duets with other artists and in fact did a whole album with Brie Darling of “Fanny” called “The Motivator” which came out in 2018.

I always want those I work with to shine. ESSEX brought such a different flavor to the song and meeting him at the video shoot cemented how I happy I am to be a part of this. We got along famously.

CV: For you, how does the overall dynamic of a song change when performing it as a duo, as is the case with working with Essex on "When You're Young," compared to a purely solo effort? Does the song change for you?
CC. 100%! I’ve been working on records with Cleopatra since 1996 and this is the first time I’ve done a duet for them and I was grateful they chose me for this.

CV: Musically speaking, many critics believe Modern Rock is missing a critical element that made it timeless and legendary.  Many cite Rock's now cookie-cutter, formulative approach, and delivery for its lack of substance. What's your take...is there something to such an assessment?
CC. Truthfully, I’m a classic rock girl. The 90’s was the last time I listened to new artists. I so agree with you on how modern rock music lost its charm. Became generic and far less exciting but I also blame that on the laziness of the biz in general now. No more talent scouts. Pay to Play ruined live performances and has made it so hard for new talent to find footing.

CV: However, there are those who feel Rock is in a revival. With the rise and recent popularity of Yungblud and now with artists like Essex, Rock is taking on a whole new attitude and swagger. Do you feel this is the kick in the pants Rock needs to reclaim its crown?
CC. Absolutely! Simple, kick ass R&R has to make a comeback because really, it never left! So many young people and players listen to classic rock. It’s taught in music schools and kids love playing it more than the newer artists. Why? Because it’s pure, exciting and from your soul. It moves you and people feel that.

CV: Do you feel cross-genre, even cross-generational duos, are essential to keeping not only the legacy of a genre alive but the artist's legacy as well?
CC. All I know is it’s fun to work with young talent. Especially when they are offering something familiar and exciting yet mysterious like ESSEX is. He reminds me of Billy Idol in how he draws you in and holds you there. He’s got great presence and a fantastic look! And he’s CUTE TOO! Ha!

Thrilled to see such a good, kindhearted young man get a chance in this crazy biz!

CV: What are your thoughts about many artists using backing tracks? Is this a new development, or has this practice been going on longer than listening audiences were aware of?
CC. If you mean live, I love it! Unless you’re a huge name there’s no money for strings, backup singers and such. You make the show the best sounding it can be for the audience and if that means backing tracks, vocal, musical, great!

Give the audience THE BEST. They deserve it!

CV: Despite many of the ups and downs and ins and outs, what do you believe being in music gave you that no other career path would have?
CC. Wow.. great question. Music gave me, ME! I found out who I am through music. It will always be my sanctuary. My ‘go to’ when things get tough!

It’s a miracle drug!

CV: In addition to the new single and accompanying video, what more can fans expect to see coming from you in 2026 and beyond?
CC. A little this, a little that! Just signed on for another Cleopatra record appearance and have a show in Germany in March and we are booking a tour in Scandinavia now.

Still carving with my chainsaw and enjoying my life…

But I will say, it’s the little surprises in life like meeting and working with ESSEX that make me truly grateful.. it gives me hope for this floundering, nutty business that I’ve been a part of for over 50 years!

CV: Thanks again, Cherie, for taking the time to share with our readers. We wish you all the best and continued success.
CC. It’s been a blast! Thank you!
