Interview with the Band Heartsick

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.

CV: Every artist experiences highs and lows. Many struggle just to move from one level to the next, and some, unfortunately, never do. What would you consider to be a pivotal point in an artist's career which would take them from one level to the next that a struggling artist should be aware of?
Heartsick: Pursuing all the opportunities that are tied to contacts that carry weight in the industry. Be pliable s well, be able to navigate things but don’t stick your feet so far down in the dirt that you are unable to see the bigger picture. Is it an individual mindset or does it equate more to opportunity? I think it is an individual mindset. You need to be aware that you are playing the long game in this and that it also involves placing your self ion the right setting for an opportunity to arise. Or is it something all together different in your opinion? There is no one easy answer it all ties together but the tying theme is consistency.

CV: What do you feel an artist can do right now to stay relevant, especially in an environment, such as the present, where performing in front of a live audience is not an option?
Heartsick: Stay active. Post on your socials, find unique ways to post performances of your live show. Stay engaged with writing and release new music consistently.

CV: What have you found to be the balancing point between relevance and over saturation when it comes to being an artist? An equal amount of playing live and being present on social media. Is there a fine line between the two or can it be looked at to some degree as the two essentially being one in the same?
Heartsick: One does not equal the other but there is a fine line because you run the risk of over saturating and burning out playing live but you also ruin the risk of over posting and “spamming” folks on line.

CV: Is there any level of consideration, or even concern, to deliver on expectations, whether it being your own or that of the fans, when working on new material?
Heartsick: On our end there is no concern. We know what we are, we are a heavy band that loves to explore those boundaries while remaining really heavy at our core. People do not know what they want until they get it.

CV: For you, what’s first when it comes to songwriting…is it a matter of lyrics melody, chords, beat, attitude? Or is it more organic than that where the moment dictates the process and outcome?
Heartsick: It is always music first usually a guitar idea or riff, from there it grows until we have something that feels like a minute of movement and song and not just a collection of parts.

CV: What do you believe makes songwriting more honest and impactful...that something that both the artist and listener can share?
Heartsick: When it comes from the soul. When it comes from a place of wanting to create art and not some stupid radio hit. When it tells a story that does not need a bunch of bullshit filler to “relate” to someone. Honesty and most of all authenticity.

CV: What do you feel has been the greatest contribution to your success as an artist?
Heartsick: I believe our belief in our selves and the folks who have been by us since this thing started and see our potential. No us without them, without our grit.

CV: What's next for you?
Heartsick: We are currently on tour with Nonpoint and Crobot on the first leg of the Painful statements tour. From here we work on a couple of videos and then we start shows again. What can fans expect to see coming up? A lot of new music and a lot of visual stimuli on top of tour dates.

CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with
our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
