Interview with Steven Miller of Dark Remedy

By Mick Michaels

Cosmick View: Hello, Steven! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thanks for taking some time out of your day to speak with us. It's greatly appreciated.

CV: What do you feel sets the band apart from other bands, especially those of similar sound and style? What's the specific allure your sound and style have that has people taking notice?
Steven Miller: At its core Dark Remedy songs are made for arenas. We really wanted to make hard hitting music that can really slam on a massive PA system. The goal for each production is how big and wide can we make this thing?!

CV: For any band, dynamics is key to grabbing an audience's attention. What do you feel is the main ingredient to having such a captivating dynamic and being able to bring something more to the music?
SM: Every song we try to change it up while still maintaining the vision. Just take a look at our first single, Blood Money, and compare it to our latest single, Possession. One is an old school anthem; the next has a dark and mysterious vibe...but both have their moments where they turn up the energy and that’s what makes it a Dark Remedy song.

CV: How would you describe the ultimate musical experience for your fans? And how does the band go about creating that musical vision, while generating the impact the band wants to have on its audience?
SM: We are unapologetic in the belief that more IS MORE!

CV: The music business has always been one that regardless of who you are, where you came from or where you've been, you can either sink or swim.  Does this type of realism have any effect on how the band drives itself to succeed?
SM: 100%. It really is a full time job and you never know exactly how all that hard work translates into the results you’re looking for. If I’ve learned anything from this experience so far is that you need to always stay on your A game so when that opportunity does come you can deliver and make the most out of it.

CV: In your opinion, is there any middle ground for a band or is it a do or die climate in today's music industry?
SM: In today’s industry, especially with the advent of the internet, there has never been more viable avenues to make a living in music. I think people focus on the specific path of developing a band, rightfully pointing out the challenges that presents, and then make blanket statements about the entire state of the industry.  But that doesn’t include the video game composers, film scorers, recording engineers, arrangers, symphony conductors, street performers, etc., etc.

CV: What's at the core of the band's songwriting approach? Are there certain elements that are considered when a song begins to take form and evolves?
SM: We work with a purpose to always out do ourselves with each release and we always try to improve as we go.

CV: Do you allow things to just happen when writing; seeing where a song goes, or is there a certain course of action and structure you keep a song on, thus, essentially making it destined to achieve its overall potential?
SM: It’s different for every song and I think that’s why each has their own identity. Some songs are very intentional and others just come out of nowhere but you have to be open to the process and let things happen naturally even if you have a goal in mind.

CV: Do you feel how the fans and critics describe the band’s music accurately reflects how you would describe the band’s music?
SM: We have such a broad list of influences that I always find it amusing when folks make a super weird comparison. You never know in what context someone is going find your music and they may not have the same background as you to know what the right comparisons would be. The fact that they took the time to listen and found something to appreciate is what matters most.

CV: Walk us through a typical show for the band...what can fans who have never seen you perform expect?
SM: We hope to be able to answer this question very soon. As of right now we have not played a live show. The band started as a studio project during COVID and things just started taking off very quickly. It’s challenging that we are all living in different states but playing live is definitely something we are looking forward to.

CV: What more can fans look forward to seeing coming from the band?
SM: Lots of new music. We are sitting on a ton of material and we cannot wait to share!

CV: Thank you again Steven for spending some time talking and sharing with our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, show host, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
