Interview with Rocketsmith (UK) Drummer Anthony Medd

By Mick Michaels

COSMICK VIEW: Hello! Welcome to The Cosmick View. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to chat with me, it's greatly appreciated.
Anthony Medd:  Hi Mick, pleasure to meet you and thanks for giving us this opportunity to speak with you in America.
CV: Is it more than luck to make it? Does strategy and planning play a major role in music success? Or is it a “right place, right time” type of scenario?
AM: Planning and strategy play a big part in gaining the exposure and hopefully creating that "buzz" about a band…which should in turn, lead to bigger and better things for the band. Meeting the right people and being in the right scenes, etc, also helps…though luck and right place and time can play a big part because if you’re the right type of band that someone coincidentally is looking for you’re onto an instant winner.

CV: As an artist, how would you define success? Are there different interpretations of success within the music business in your opinion?
AM: There are different levels to success. Playing your own music in a venue to people who want to hear it is a success in itself. Touring, having people buy your music and merch… To be able to make a living from playing your own music is a success.  A band being known locally, nationally, then internationally are all higher levels to success.

CV: What was it that drove you to become an artist? Was it love at first sight?
AM: The love of music and playing…our friendship and wanting to creating our own music

CV: Besides yourself, who would you say has been your biggest supporter... your number one fan?
AM: Our families support us in all we do.

CV: Rocketsmith’s music has a lot of depth and emotional substance connected to it. There is a familiar essence to the music, which is very alluring, yet it is uniquely the band’s own sound and style. How do you see this mixture of emotionally familiar yet original style of songwriting setting the band apart from its contemporaries?
AM: Our music is emotionally familiar because it is straight from the heart…we are all great friends and love being in this band. We all add our "piece" to the songs. It is that essence that we bring that makes Rocketsmith unique and yet sound familiar. Because we give our all, the music is us… We mean what we play. I think that comes across and connects with people.

CV: Do you consider Rocketsmith a band that can successfully cross multiple genre lines and still maintain its own identity?
AM: Our music has and does appealed to many Rock, Punk, Pop and Metal fans alike. I think most people can connect, familiarize and take something from our music.

CV: What artist or band, would you say, has inspired or influenced you the most over the years and why?
AM: There are a few but I suppose Bruce Springsteen because he can create and capture an energy…an emotion…a message in a song and convey it to the listener so very well. He's a fantastic song writer.

CV: Without naming names, has there ever been an artist or band you’ve felt has inspired you the least…and if so why?
AM: Well if they don't inspire you or connect with you, you don't listen to them so they won't inspire you in anyway…
I suppose Morrissey and the Smiths are on that list though.

CV: Have you ever imagined yourself doing something other than being a musical artist? If so what would that be and why?
AM: We all love being creative…I suppose that's one reason why we love playing our instruments and creating music.  So something creative…(maybe) engineering, design, etc?

CV: What's next for Rocketsmith? What can fans expect to see coming?
AM: We released our EP Balancing Act last year which we are still promoting. But we are already on to writing our next release…a full album. We also have two videos in the works to shoot. Then we'll get the album recorded and get touring and promoting that…so quite a lot.
CV: Thank you again for spending some time talking and sharing with
our readers. I wish you all the best and continued success.
AM: Thanks again for the great interview and giving this opportunity.

My name is Mick Michaels...I'm an artist, music fan, songwriter, producer, dreamer and guitarist for the traditional Heavy Metal band Corners of Sanctuary. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me; what I couldn't say in speech, I was able to do with the written word.  Writing has given me a voice and a way for me to create on a multitude of platforms including music and song, articles, independent screenplays, books and now, artist interviews. The Cosmick View is an opportunity to raise the bar and showcase artists in a positive and inspirational light. For me, it's another out-of-this-world adventure.
